PART 5 – The Cake She Finally Accepted

PART 5 – The Cake She Finally Accepted
Six months later...
Luke returned to the same backyard.
The same patio.
The same family gathering.
But this time...
There was another blackberry cobbler sitting on the table.
Madeline had baked it herself.
Her hands trembled as she carried the first slice across the yard.
She stopped in front of Luke.
Knelt slowly.
Then held out the plate.
"I owe you something."
Luke looked at the dessert.
Then at her.
"What is it?"
"The first piece..."
"...should have been yours."
Tears rolled down her face.
"I'm so sorry."
"For every birthday."
"For every hug I never gave you."
"For every time I made you wonder if you belonged."
Luke stayed quiet for a moment.
Then wrapped his little arms around her neck.
"It's okay, Grandma."
"I still saved you a seat."
No one at the table could hold back their tears.
Years later...
Whenever someone complimented Madeline's famous blackberry cobbler...
She always smiled and told the same story.
"This recipe didn't save my family."
"An eight-year-old boy's forgiveness did."
And every family dinner after that...
The very first slice always went to Luke.
