PART 5: Unraveling the Corporate Lies

PART 5: Unraveling the Corporate Lies
Forensic audits expose illegal financial schemes.
By afternoon, the chaos outside the building had quieted down, replaced by the quiet, efficient hum of my father’s corporate legal team reviewing the wreckage Daniel had left behind.
I sat at the mahogany dining table, reviewing a comprehensive forensic audit report prepared by Bennett Industrial’s chief financial investigators.
The pages laid out a horrifying picture of my husband's business dealings.
For the past year, while I was pregnant, Daniel had been quietly shifting company funds from his failing real estate firm into unauthorized personal accounts, using forged expense reports and fake consulting contracts.
Worse still, he had used our joint marital assets as collateral to secure high-interest loans from private lenders—loans that were now defaulting because the primary accounts had been frozen.
“He was bleeding your personal accounts dry, Claire,” Martin, my lead attorney, explained as he pointed to a highlighted column of figures. “If you hadn't frozen the assets yesterday, he would have drained your pre-marital trust fund by the end of the month to bail out his failing developments.”
I stared at the numbers, feeling a cold wave of disgust wash over me.
He hadn't just emotionally abandoned me in a hospital room; he had been planning financial betrayal right under my nose.
“Can we attach his personal assets to the divorce settlement?” I asked coldly.
“What personal assets?” Martin smiled grimly. “Without your financial backing, his real estate firm is already facing bankruptcy proceedings. His creditors are circling like sharks. By the time we finish executing the corporate clawbacks, Daniel Mercer won't just be broke—he’ll be owing millions.”
I closed the audit report and slid it across the table.
“Proceed with all criminal and civil motions, Martin. I want a full forensic accounting submitted to the federal prosecutor’s office by tomorrow morning.”
“Consider it done,” Martin said, gathering his files. “And Claire... your father is downstairs in the lobby. He wants to know if he can come up to see his grandson.”

A warm smile finally broke across my face.
“Tell him to come right up.”
