PART 4: The Morning Confrontation
Desperate husbands pound on forbidden doors.
The next morning, the winter sun rose over Chicago, casting a sharp, brilliant light across the snow-dusted rooftops.
I was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows in the penthouse living room, sipping hot green tea, when my private nurse informed me that someone was causing a scene at the security desk downstairs.
I stepped onto the private balcony overlooking the grand entrance plaza.
Down below, standing behind the security barrier in the freezing morning air, was Daniel.
He looked exhausted. His hair was messy, his designer coat was unbuttoned against the wind, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes.
Beside him stood Elaine and Melissa, looking like frozen, miserable crows in their expensive furs.
Daniel was shouting up at the building, waving his arms frantically toward my balcony.
“Claire! Open the door! Let me in!” his voice echoed up the canyon of glass and steel. “We need to talk! You can't just lock me out of my own home!”
People walking by stopped to stare.
I didn't answer. I didn't even flinch.
I simply watched him from forty floors up, realizing how small he looked when stripped of the artificial power my money had provided him.
A pair of uniformed building security guards stepped out of the lobby doors, approaching Daniel and his family with stern expressions.
“Sir, you are trespassing on private property,” one guard warned, stepping directly into Daniel’s personal space. “If you do not leave the premises immediately, we will have the local police arrest you for harassment.”
“Harassment?! This is my apartment!” Daniel screamed, pointing a shaking finger upward. “My wife is up there!”
“Mr. Daniel Mercer, your residential lease was terminated yesterday by the property holding corporation,” the guard replied mechanically, reading from a legal notice. “You have no legal right to enter this building. Step back.”
Elaine grabbed Daniel’s arm, her face twisted in rage and humiliation.

“Let’s go, Daniel! Don't humiliate yourself any further over this ungrateful little nobody!” Elaine hissed, pulling him away toward the street.
Daniel took one last desperate look up toward the penthouse windows, his mouth moving silently as he realized that the woman he had abandoned at the hospital six hours after giving birth was the very person holding the keys to his entire existence.
