PART 3 — The Man She Feared Most

PART 3 — The Man She Feared Most

The headlights stopped in front of the house.

No one got out immediately.

The engine idled quietly, as though whoever sat behind the wheel already knew exactly what was happening inside.

Mia's face drained of every trace of color.

"He's here," she whispered.

Ethan immediately turned off the kitchen lights.

"Liam."

Their son looked up, confused.

"I need you to go upstairs and lock yourself in Mommy's old bedroom."

"But—"

"Now."

For the first time in his six years, Liam saw something in his father's eyes that left no room for questions.

He ran.

The moment the bedroom door clicked shut upstairs, Ethan walked to the front window and carefully peeked through the curtains.

A black SUV.

One man stepped out.

Daniel Harper.

Still wearing the same tailored navy suit he had worn to the office that morning.

Still carrying the same calm smile everyone trusted.

He rang the doorbell.

Once.

Twice.

Then his phone appeared in his hand.

Ethan's own phone vibrated on the kitchen counter.

Daniel Calling.

Mia grabbed Ethan's wrist.

"Don't answer."

He declined the call.

A second later, a text message arrived.

I know she's inside. Open the door before someone gets hurt.

Ethan felt his stomach twist.

How could Daniel possibly know?

No one had seen them return.

No one except...

His thoughts froze.

The shelter.

Someone must have been watching.

Daniel knocked again.

This time harder.

"Ethan!" he called through the door.

"I just came to check on you."

No answer.

"I heard someone saw Mia today."

Silence.

"I know you're in there."

Mia backed away from the windows, trembling uncontrollably.

"He always talks like that," she whispered.

"So calm."

"Even when he..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Ethan quietly opened the drawer beside the refrigerator.

Inside was the handgun he legally owned but had never once fired outside a shooting range.

He checked the chamber with shaking hands.

"I'll protect you."

Mia looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"You couldn't."

His head snapped toward her.

"What?"

"There were others."

"Daniel wasn't the leader."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

"He worked for someone."

Ethan frowned.

"Who?"

Mia stared at the floor.

"I never saw his face."

"They always called him..."

"The Chairman."

Outside, Daniel stopped knocking.

Instead...

He smiled.

Then reached into his jacket.

Ethan's heart raced.

But instead of pulling out a weapon...

Daniel held up a tablet.

He turned the screen toward the living room window.

A live video appeared.

Ethan felt every drop of blood leave his body.

Liam.

Someone was filming Liam inside his bedroom.

From outside.

The camera angle came from the woods behind the house.

A masked man stood only a few feet from the bedroom window.

Daniel spoke loudly enough to be heard through the glass.

"You have exactly sixty seconds."

"If you don't open the door..."

"My friend outside will go inside."

Mia let out a terrified cry.

"No!"

Ethan realized this had never been about him.

They wanted Mia.

She was the only witness who could identify Daniel.

He looked toward the stairs.

His son.

His wife.

His family.

Then something clicked inside his mind.

Three years ago, Daniel had organized every search party.

Which meant...

He had always known where Mia was.

Every candlelight vigil.

Every television interview.

Every comforting hug.

Every promise to "keep looking."

It had all been theater.

Daniel had been standing beside him while secretly holding Mia captive.

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

The timer on Daniel's watch reached thirty seconds.

Then...

A low growl echoed through the front yard.

Daniel frowned.

Another growl.

Closer this time.

He slowly turned around.

From the darkness beyond the driveway, nearly a dozen police vehicles rolled silently toward the house with their headlights off.

Red and blue lights exploded across the neighborhood.

Daniel's confident smile vanished instantly.

Officers surrounded the property from every direction.

One commanding voice thundered through a loudspeaker.

"Daniel Harper!"

"Federal agents!"

"Step away from the house!"

Daniel didn't surrender.

Instead...

He looked directly through the front window.

At Mia.

And smiled one last time.

"You should have stayed hidden."

May you like

Then he reached into his jacket...

...and pulled out a remote control with a blinking red light.
