PART 7: An Untouchable Guardian Forever

PART 7: An Untouchable Guardian Forever
Unyielding protection secures a brilliant future.
As evening settled over Manhattan, casting long, amber shadows across the cobblestone streets of Greenwich Village, the heavy front glass doors of the bakery were finally locked for the night.
The staff had departed through the back exit, leaving the warm, golden interior lights reflecting softly against the empty display cases.
I stood behind the marble counter, wiping down the polished surface with a clean cloth, breathing in the comforting, familiar scent of vanilla and roasted coffee beans.
The heavy brass deadbolt clicked softly as it turned from the outside, and Vincent stepped into the quiet shop.
He walked slowly across the polished floor, stopping right in front of the counter, resting his hands casually in his trouser pockets.
“You had an exceptional opening day,” Vincent noted, his dark eyes scanning the pristine dining room with genuine pride. “Your manager’s preliminary sales ledger shows you sold out of every single artisanal loaf by two o'clock this afternoon.”
“We almost ran out of flour twice,” I laughed, untying my white apron and folding it neatly beside the cash register. “It’s overwhelming... but in the most wonderful way possible.”
Vincent reached across the marble counter, taking my hand in his large, warm grip.
“You earned every square inch of this, Lena,” he said quietly, his voice carrying a resonant warmth that went straight to my heart. “Your mother would have looked at this shop and wept with joy.”
I stepped around the end of the counter, closing the small distance between us, resting my hand against the lapel of his blazer.
“And I wouldn't even be standing here if you hadn't answered my call that stormy night,” I whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. “You kept your promise. You reached me in eight minutes.”
Vincent looked down at me, a rare, tender smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“I would have crossed fire and broken every law in this country to reach you in four, Lena,” he murmured softly.
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a thick black business card—the exact same heavy cardstock with gold lettering he had handed me months ago at the diner, except this time, the back was completely blank.
“You don't need this card anymore,” Vincent said, sliding it gently across the marble surface. “Because you are never, ever alone again.”
I picked up the card, smiling as I grasped the reality of my new life.
The battered diner waitress who had once cowered behind a splintered bathroom door was gone forever.

In her place stood an independent woman, a thriving business owner, and the protected bloodline of an empire.
Under the watchful, unyielding gaze of Vincent Moretti, I was finally, completely untouchable.
