PART 7: Victor Made One Fatal Mistake

PART 7: Victor Made One Fatal Mistake

Victor Romano almost escaped.

Almost.

At 2:13 a.m., his SUV crossed the Queensboro Bridge.

By 2:27, he had abandoned it behind an old warehouse in Long Island City.

He switched to another vehicle waiting with the engine running.

A careful plan.

One prepared long before tonight.

Victor knew exactly what happened to people who stole from powerful men.

He wasn't planning to become one of them.

---

What Victor didn't know...

...was that Damiano never relied on luck.

Every vehicle leaving the estate had been recorded.

Every license plate transmitted.

Every traffic camera quietly monitored.

By 2:41 a.m., Rafael received the first location update.

"Target heading east."

"Three minutes behind."

Rafael smiled for the first time all night.

"He thinks he's running."

"He doesn't realize we're simply following."

---

Victor finally stopped outside a private marina.

A small speedboat waited at Dock Seven.

One man stood beside it holding a duffel bag.

Cash.

Passports.

A new identity.

Victor climbed out.

"Hurry."

"We don't have much time."

The man handed him the bag.

Before Victor could unzip it...

Headlights flooded the dock.

Black SUVs surrounded every exit.

The speedboat captain immediately raised both hands.

Victor froze.

Rafael calmly stepped out of the lead vehicle.

"You planned well."

Victor slowly backed away.

"You have no warrant."

Rafael shrugged.

"I don't need one."

"Mr. Verrone simply asked me to invite you back."

Victor suddenly pulled a pistol.

Three laser sights appeared on his chest before the weapon was fully raised.

He looked around.

Every angle covered.

Every escape closed.

His hand slowly opened.

The gun fell onto the dock.

---

An hour later...

Victor sat alone inside the Verrone estate library.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His confidence had disappeared.

Damiano entered carrying only one folder.

No guards.

No shouting.

No threats.

He placed the folder on the table.

Inside were payroll records.

Bank transfers.

Security footage.

Employee statements.

Every missing dollar.

Every forged signature.

Every fake authorization.

Victor stared silently.

Damiano finally spoke.

"For six years..."

"You stole from people who cleaned my home."

"You stole from widows."

"You stole from single mothers."

"You stole from children."

Victor swallowed.

"I can explain."

Damiano shook his head.

"No."

"You can confess."

"There is a difference."

Victor tried one last lie.

"It wasn't only me."

"There were others."

"I was following orders."

Damiano's eyes never moved.

"Good."

"Then you'll tell me every name."

---

At sunrise...

Police vehicles quietly entered the estate.

This time...

Not because of Damiano.

Because Victor Romano had signed a complete confession.

Names.

Accounts.

Bribes.

Forged payroll records.

Offshore transfers.

Six years of corruption.

Before noon...

Three accountants...

Two attorneys...

And one city payroll inspector...

Were all under investigation.

The newspapers would later call it the largest employee fraud case connected to a private estate in New York.

But none of that mattered most to Damiano.

He walked into the servants' dining room carrying a single envelope.

Every employee stood nervously.

Unsure whether they still had jobs.

Damiano placed the envelope on the table.

Inside...

Certified checks.

Every stolen dollar.

With interest.

Six years of missing wages...

Returned in full.

Some employees cried.

Others simply stared.

Sofia couldn't speak at all.

Emily looked up at Damiano.

"Does this mean Mommy doesn't have to work all night anymore?"

Damiano looked at Sofia.

"No."

"From today..."

"No one in this house will ever have to beg for what they've already earned."

Emily smiled.

Then wrapped her little arms around his leg again.

For the second time...

The most feared man in New York forgot there were hundreds of people watching him.

He only saw...

May you like

One little girl...

Who had unknowingly changed his entire world.
