PART 4: The next morning, Damiano kept his promise—but when he walked into the elementary school holding Lily's hand, someone was already waiting to turn that innocent visit into a deadly trap.

At exactly 8:47 a.m., a black Rolls-Royce stopped in front of Jefferson Elementary School.

Parents immediately turned to stare.

Teachers paused in the middle of greeting students.

Even the crossing guard forgot to wave traffic forward.

The rear door opened.

Damiano Verrone stepped out wearing a charcoal suit without a tie.

No body armor.

No visible weapons.

Just a small paper gift bag in one hand.

Rafael climbed out behind him, scanning every rooftop, parked vehicle, and nearby intersection.

Four discreet security vehicles remained a block away.

Close enough to react.

Far enough not to frighten children.

Lily was already waiting near the entrance with her mother.

The moment she saw Damiano...

She ran.

"Mr. Damiano!"

He knelt before she reached him.

She threw her arms around his neck.

"You came!"

"I said I would."

She smiled so brightly that every trace of yesterday's tears disappeared.

Then she reached into the paper bag he was carrying.

"You remembered!"

Inside was a tiny pink name tag.

Written neatly across the front...

DAD FOR TODAY

Lily carefully pinned it onto his jacket herself.

"There."

"Now everybody knows."

Damiano looked down at the handmade badge.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

It felt heavier than any medal he had ever received.

---

Inside Classroom 1-B...

Twenty-three children sat beside their fathers.

Some wore business suits.

Others arrived in work boots.

One man still had paint on his hands.

Another smelled faintly of engine oil.

None of it mattered.

Every child had someone.

When Lily walked through the door holding Damiano's hand...

The room fell silent.

Her teacher, Mrs. Bennett, blinked twice.

She had expected perhaps an uncle.

A family friend.

Certainly not the man whose face occasionally appeared on financial magazine covers.

"Good morning..."

Mrs. Bennett managed.

"You must be..."

Damiano extended his hand politely.

"Damiano."

"Lily invited me."

The teacher smiled warmly.

"Well..."

"We're very happy you accepted."

Across the classroom...

Lily beamed with pride.

---

The morning began with simple activities.

Reading together.

Drawing family portraits.

Building paper airplanes.

For nearly two hours...

Damiano forgot about board meetings...

Territory disputes...

Political negotiations...

Everything.

He helped Lily color outside the lines.

He laughed quietly when glitter ended up on his expensive jacket.

She insisted his stick figure needed bigger shoulders.

"Because you're strong."

She explained it as though it were obvious.

Other parents couldn't help watching.

The intimidating man from television...

Was patiently cutting paper hearts because one little girl couldn't make the scissors work.

---

During snack time...

Another child approached nervously.

"Mister..."

"My dad says you're famous."

Damiano smiled faintly.

"Does he?"

"What are you famous for?"

The classroom grew very quiet.

Several adults exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Before Damiano could answer...

Lily proudly spoke first.

"He's famous for keeping promises."

Mrs. Bennett had to turn away for a moment.

Her eyes suddenly filled with tears.

---

Outside...

Rafael wasn't smiling.

Something felt wrong.

Too wrong.

He touched the earpiece hidden beneath his collar.

"Report."

One guard answered immediately.

"North entrance clear."

"Parking lot clear."

Another voice followed.

"South fence secure."

Then...

A third voice interrupted.

"Black delivery van."

"Parked across Maple Street."

"It arrived twenty-three minutes ago."

Rafael frowned.

"School deliveries?"

"No company markings."

"No driver visible."

His instincts immediately sharpened.

"Keep watching."

---

Across the street...

Inside the parked van...

A man lowered a pair of binoculars.

He wasn't looking at the school anymore.

He was looking at photographs taped beside the dashboard.

One showed Damiano.

The other...

Showed Lily.

The man calmly picked up his phone.

"The target stayed."

"The child worked."

A cold voice answered through the speaker.

"Excellent."

"Proceed after dismissal."

The call ended.

The driver started the engine...

Then quietly waited.

---

Back inside the classroom...

Mrs. Bennett asked every child to introduce the adult beside them.

One by one, they stood.

"My dad is a firefighter."

"My daddy builds houses."

"My father fixes airplanes."

Finally...

It was Lily's turn.

She looked up at Damiano.

Then proudly faced her classmates.

"This is my daddy..."

She paused.

"...just for today."

Several children smiled.

One little boy suddenly raised his hand.

"My dad says real dads stay forever."

The words slipped out innocently.

Lily's smile faded.

Before sadness could return to her eyes...

Damiano stood beside her.

He placed one gentle hand on her shoulder.

Then calmly answered for everyone to hear.

"A real father isn't measured by one day..."

"...he's measured by whether a child feels protected."

The classroom became completely silent.

No one noticed...

That outside the school windows...

The black van had quietly moved closer.

And for the first time in years...

Damiano Verrone wasn't the one being hunted.

May you like

The little girl standing beside him...

Was.
