PART 4: Breaking the Ice Wall
Unfamiliar arms hold fragile miracle lives.
Slowly, with visible hesitation and trembling fingers, Naomi transferred the smallest of the quintuplets—baby Maya—into Hudson's open, rigid arms.
For a terrifying second, Hudson felt as though he were holding a delicate glass artifact that might shatter if he breathed too hard.
He held his breath, his broad shoulders tensing up as the tiny infant shifted against his charcoal suit jacket.
Maya blinked her dark, curious eyes up at him, letting out a soft, tiny yawn that smelled faintly of warm milk and cotton.
Then, astonishingly, her tiny hand reached up, her miniature fingers wrapping securely around the thumb of his right hand.
A silent shockwave travelled up Hudson's arm, striking directly against his frozen heart.
The hard, defensive walls he had spent a year building around his soul cracked down the middle.
"She... she's holding my thumb," Hudson whispered, his voice catching in his throat, threatening to betray emotions he hadn't allowed to surface since the day he buried his wife.
"She knows you're her father, Mr. Vale," Naomi said softly, her panic subsiding into a deep, steady grace as she balanced the remaining four babies. "They always know. Even when you're hiding behind closed doors."
Hudson stood in the center of the sprawling, sterile mansion, holding his daughter for the very first time, realizing how much of their lives he had missed out of sheer cowardice.
He looked from Maya up to Naomi, seeing the dark circles under her eyes, the worn fabric of her maid's uniform, and the immense, quiet dignity radiating from her spirit.
