PART 3: Reclaiming the Past

PART 3: Reclaiming the Past
Old photographs bridge fifteen years of silence.
The vastness of the penthouse felt terrifying to someone whose entire life had been measured by the cramped, water-damaged walls of a trailer home.
I stood awkwardly in the center of the minimalist white living room, clutching the strap of my hoodie, suddenly hyper-aware of how out of place I looked against the polished marble floors.
Liam must have noticed the tension in my shoulders.
He set my plaid tote down gently by the entryway, walked over, and placed a warm, heavy hand on my back.
“Come with me, Summer,” Liam said quietly. “There’s something upstairs in the private study I want to show you.”
He led me up a floating glass staircase into a quieter, book-lined room overlooking the city.
Julian and Leo trailed closely behind us, their usual high-energy banter muted by a shared, heavy reverence.
Liam walked over to a secure mahogany cabinet against the wall, unlocked it with a small brass key, and pulled out a worn, leather-bound photo album.
He carried it over to a plush white sofa, sitting down and gently patting the cushion beside him.
I sat down, my heart fluttering nervously.
Liam opened the album.
Inside were hundreds of glossy photographs dating back fifteen years—pictures of three young boys with messy hair and defiant expressions, captured standing in front of imposing gates, looking lost and angry.
“When our parents separated and Dad’s lawyers forced Mom out, we were told she didn't want us,” Julian explained softly, sitting on my other side and pointing to a picture of himself as a young boy clutching a baseball bat. “They told us she abandoned us for a life on the road. We spent years hating her, wondering why she never came back.”
“She never stopped looking for you,” I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. “Mom kept a box under her bed with newspaper clippings of your successes. She watched Liam on financial news channels. She watched Julian’s movies in the dark. And she watched Leo’s gaming tournaments on her phone until her eyes hurt.”
Leo let out a choked sniffle, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his designer hoodie.
“She really watched me?” Leo asked, his voice cracking.
“Every single stream,” I nodded, looking right at him. “She even learned what a ‘clutch’ was just so she could understand when you won your matches.”
Liam turned another page, revealing a gap where several pictures had clearly been removed.
“Dad’s family erased her from our lives legally,” Liam said, his jaw clenching with a sudden, dark fury that made him look like the ruthless venture capitalist he was. “They threatened us, cut off our communication, and lied to our faces. But they couldn't erase the truth. And now that you’re here, Summer... our family is finally complete.”
The Shadow of the Past
Billionaire brothers unite against old enemies.
The quiet emotional warmth of the penthouse was suddenly interrupted by a sharp, rhythmic tapping on Liam’s encrypted tablet resting on the coffee table.
Liam glanced down at the screen, and the gentle brotherly softness in his eyes vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating glare of a Silicon Valley mogul dealing with corporate warfare.
“What is it, Liam?” Julian asked, noticing the shift in atmosphere.
“Our grandfather’s estate attorneys just received notification that we’ve logged an unrecorded sibling into our family trust registry,” Liam stated flatly, his fingers flying across the tablet’s glass surface. “They’re already mobilizing.”
My stomach dropped like a stone.
“Mobilizing? What does that mean?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Are they going to take me away?”
“They can’t touch you, Summer,” Leo growled, stepping forward with his fists clenched, his gamer persona entirely replaced by protective rage. “You’re eighteen, and Liam controls half the commercial real estate in this state. Let them try.”
“It’s not about taking her away,” Liam explained, his voice tight and controlled as he connected a secure call to his legal counsel. “It’s about control. Dad’s side of the family has always operated like an old-world syndicate. They viewed us as assets, not children. Finding out Mom had another child—a daughter she raised away from their influence—threatens their entire legacy structure.”
Julian stood up, pacing across the marble floor like a caged panther, his movie-star charm completely overshadowed by real, palpable danger.
“They thought they broke us years ago,” Julian said darkly. “They thought by separating us from Mom, they turned us into compliant corporate soldiers and Hollywood puppets. They didn't count on Summer walking into an LAPD precinct with a plaid tote bag and blowing their entire system wide open.”
Liam looked up from his tablet, locking his dark eyes onto mine with fierce, unyielding loyalty.
“Listen to me, Summer,” Liam said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “You are a Vance by blood, and nobody—not our grandfather, not our father’s estate board, and not a single high-priced corporate lawyer—is ever going to intimidate you in this city. We survived their games once. We won't do it again.”
A strange, warm strength bloomed in my chest.
For my entire life, I had felt small, invisible, and unprotected against the harsh realities of the world.
Now, sitting seventy floors above Los Angeles surrounded by three extraordinarily powerful men who happened to be my brothers, I realized something profound.

I wasn't alone anymore.
And anyone foolish enough to test my new family was about to find out what happened when you crossed a venture capitalist, a Hollywood icon, and a gaming phenomenon.
