PART 5: Reclaiming the Past

PART 5: Reclaiming the Past

Military honors outshine civilian greed.

Three days after the arrest of Arthur Sterling and the collapse of Vance & Sterling Legal, I stood on the parade grounds of Fort Bragg under a brilliant, cloudless sky, surrounded by senior military commanders and tactical personnel.

The heavy burn scars spanning my back were no longer something to hide behind civilian clothes or shame; today, they were covered by the crisp, unblemished dress uniform of a Captain in the United States Special Operations Command, adorned with the highest combat valor medals the nation could bestow.

Julian stood proudly in the front row of the audience, holding a bouquet of white orchids and watching with absolute, reverent loyalty as the commanding general pinned the Distinguished Service Cross to my chest.

When the ceremony concluded, the applause of hundreds of elite soldiers echoed across the tarmac.

I turned away from the reviewing stand, walking slowly toward the edge of the parade deck where Julian was waiting with a gentle, proud smile.

“You clean up remarkably well, Captain,” Julian teased softly, handing me the orchids.

“Better than wearing a borrowed tuxedo jacket in front of five hundred snobs,” I replied, a genuine laugh escaping my lips.

“The Sterling estate is currently in receivership,” Julian noted, shifting into a more serious, executive tone. “My legal team successfully restructured the parent company under your sole name. It’s officially yours. Every asset, every share, every patent.”

I looked out across the horizon, remembering the little sister who had laughed as she tore my collar open to humiliate me, and the father who had ordered security to throw me out into the cold.

They had tried to destroy me with fire and deceit.

Instead, they had simply forged me into something unbreakable.

“Let’s go tour the new corporate headquarters, Julian,” I said, resting my hand comfortably on the hilt of my dress saber. “We have an empire to run.”
