PART 5 — The DNA Hidden Beneath the Ink

PART 5 — The DNA Hidden Beneath the Ink
The backyard had become completely silent.
No one cared about the birthday cake anymore.
No one looked at the decorations.
Every eye remained fixed on the tiny tattoo hidden beneath Clara's swimsuit.
And on Glen.
His face had turned almost gray.
He looked at the tattoo.
Then at me.
Then back at Clara.
"I... I don't understand," he whispered.
But I did.
Not everything.
Just enough to know someone had been lying for a very long time.
Dad slowly lowered himself into a patio chair.
His hands trembled.
"When did you get that tattoo?"
Clara swallowed.
"It... it was years ago."
"What does it mean?"
"It doesn't mean anything."
I laughed.
Coldly.
"Funny."
"Because my husband had the exact same tattoo."
I looked directly at Glen.
"Didn't you?"
His eyes closed.
"...Yes."
Gasps spread across the guests.
Ashley—my cousin—pulled out her phone.
"I have pictures."
Everyone turned toward her.
"My wedding."
"Glen was changing into his tux."
"He took his shirt off."
She frantically scrolled through old photos.
Thirty seconds later...
She froze.
"Oh my God."
She enlarged one image.
There it was.
The exact same symbol.
Same size.
Same angle.
Same faded black ink.
Only...
Glen's tattoo had mysteriously disappeared two years ago.
He had claimed laser removal.
Now...
An identical mark sat hidden beneath Clara's swimsuit.
"Explain."
Dad's voice cracked.
Neither of them answered.
Little Ariel tugged my hand.
"Mommy?"
"Why are they scared?"
I knelt beside her.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
She shook her head.
"No."
"The shiny man says Daddy forgot."
Every adult looked at her.
"What shiny man?" I asked softly.
"The man who talks when I sleep."
More uncomfortable silence.
"He says Daddy made a promise."
My stomach tightened.
Children often misunderstood things.
But sometimes...
They repeated conversations adults wished had stayed buried.
I stood.
"Glen."
"Take off your shirt."
He stared at me.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"I already told everyone I removed the tattoo."
"Then prove it."
Very slowly...
He unbuttoned his polo.
Pulled it off.
The laser treatment had faded most of it.
But not completely.
Under bright afternoon sunlight...
The outline remained.
Exactly where Ashley's wedding photo showed it.
Exactly matching Clara's.
Only...
Something else caught my eye.
Running across the faded ink...
Was a long surgical scar.
Fresh enough to be only a couple years old.
"That's not laser removal."
I whispered.
"That's surgery."
Clara suddenly shouted.
"Enough!"
Everyone jumped.
"You don't know what you're talking about!"
"No?"
I stepped closer.
"Then tell everyone why two married adults secretly shared matching tattoos."
"And why both tried to erase them."
She said nothing.
Dad slowly stood.
His wedding ring slipped from his trembling fingers...
And landed on the concrete beside the pool.
"I asked you one question."
His voice was barely audible.
"Were you involved with my son-in-law?"
Clara burst into tears.
But Glen...
Still couldn't answer.
Because at that exact moment...
Someone behind us quietly said,
"I think I can."
Every head turned toward the driveway.
A silver SUV had just pulled in.
A woman stepped out holding a thick manila folder.
She looked directly at Glen...
Then at Clara.
"My name is Dr. Melissa Harper."
"I performed both tattoo-removal consultations."
"And neither patient came in asking to erase a tattoo."
She slowly opened the folder.
May you like
"They came asking me..."
"...how to remove evidence connecting them to the same secret."
