Part 4 – The Report That Had Been Hidden for Nine Years

Part 4 – The Report That Had Been Hidden for Nine Years
The elderly investigator slowly walked across the backyard.
The thick manila envelope in his hands looked ordinary.
Yet somehow...
Everyone stared at it as though it contained a bomb.
He stopped in front of me.
"Mrs. Collins..."
"I've been trying to deliver this report for almost a decade."
I frowned.
"I canceled the investigation."
"You canceled payment."
He corrected me gently.
"But not the investigation."
"I finished it anyway."
My hands trembled as I accepted the envelope.
Across the patio...
Glen suddenly shouted,
"Don't open it!"
Too late.
I slid the papers out.
The first page contained dozens of photographs.
Hotel receipts.
Bank transfers.
Restaurant surveillance stills.
Private flight manifests.
Every document carried the same dates.
The exact six months Clara had mysteriously disappeared before my wedding.
My father stepped beside me.
His face slowly hardened.
"Read it."
I turned the page.
The investigator spoke quietly.
"Mrs. Clara Collins rented a lake house under a false name."
"She wasn't alone."
He handed me another photograph.
Glen.
Walking into the cabin.
Holding Clara's hand.
Not once.
Not twice.
But over twenty separate documented visits.
My father's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
The investigator nodded sadly.
"I'm afraid there's more."
He opened another folder.
Inside were copies of text messages recovered from an old phone backup.
One message from Clara read:
> She's completely in love with you now. Don't ruin the plan.
Glen replied only seconds later.
> Relax. She'll never suspect anything.
Another message.
> After the wedding, we end everything forever.
> Nobody can ever know about us.
I felt physically sick.
Nine years.
Nine years of marriage...
Built on a lie that began before I even walked down the aisle.
I slowly looked at Glen.
"Were you ever going to tell me?"
He lowered his head.
"It was over before we got married."
Clara laughed bitterly.
"You still don't understand."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
Almost relieved.
"It wasn't an affair."
The backyard became completely silent.
"What?"
My father whispered.
Clara closed her eyes.
"It started before I ever met your father."
She looked directly at Glen.
"We were together for almost two years."
My heart stopped.
Then she spoke the sentence that shattered every remaining piece of our family.
"I only married your father..."
"...because Glen ended the relationship."
Even the children playing inside the house seemed to go quiet.
My father stared at his wife in disbelief.
"You married me..."
"...to stay close to him?"
Tears rolled down Clara's face.
"I thought he'd come back."
"But then..."
She looked at me.
"He fell in love with you."
"I tried to leave."
"I really did."
"But by then it was too late."
The investigator slowly removed one final document.
"This explains the six-month disappearance."
It was a medical record.
Private.
Sealed.
I unfolded it.
The diagnosis made my blood freeze.
Pregnancy.
Estimated gestation:
11 weeks.
My hands began shaking uncontrollably.
I looked up.
Then back down.
Then up again.
My voice barely existed.
"Clara..."
"Were you..."
She started crying.
Before she could answer...
Glen whispered one word.
"Yes."
The world seemed to stop turning.
I couldn't breathe.
My father couldn't move.
Even Ariel stood silently in the doorway, clutching her birthday balloon.
I slowly looked at the next page.
It was a hospital discharge summary.
One sentence had been highlighted.
Pregnancy ended following emergency miscarriage.
A date.
Exactly four months before Glen proposed to me.
I looked at Glen through tears.
"So all these years..."
"You let me believe you had never loved anyone before me."
He couldn't even look into my eyes.
Because he knew...
The next truth would destroy what little remained of our family.
And Clara finally whispered the words none of us were prepared to hear.
May you like
"I wasn't carrying just any baby..."
"I was carrying Glen's."
