The morning sun crested the horizon as our heavily packed moving truck rolled out of the driveway, heading north toward the open interstate.
I sat in the passenger seat of our SUV, looking back one last time at the brick house in Virginia where I had grown up learning how to make myself invisible to keep the peace.
The backyard fire pit was cold now, filled with gray ash and blackened wood, stripped forever of its destructive power.
In the backseat, Lily slept soundly in her car seat, one tiny fist tucked securely under her chin, breathing with the easy, untroubled rhythm of a child who knew she was safe.
