PART 5: Statements to the Badge
Recorded testimonies lock down ironclad charges.
By 4:30 p.m., the backyard was officially designated an active crime scene yellow police tape stretched tightly across the maple trees and the porch railing.
Two county detectives sat at our kitchen table, taking official statements while paramedics tended to my father’s severe second-degree burns in the living room.
I sat across from Detective Miller, holding Lily safely in her carrier, while reciting every single detail of what had transpired beside the fire pit.
"And you state that Mrs. Helen Mercer explicitly said you 'betrayed the family order' before tossing the infant?" Detective Miller asked, his pen moving rapidly across his notepad.
"Yes," I answered firmly. "And my sister Rebecca physically blocked me from reaching my daughter while she did it."
"We've already secured corroborating statements from four independent neighbors and your cousin Sarah," Detective Miller noted, looking up with a grim expression. "The video doorbell from across the street also captured the entire sequence of events, including the attempt on the child's life and your sister's obstruction."
He closed his notepad with a decisive snap.
"Warrants are being drawn up right now for aggravated malicious wounding, attempted homicide of a minor, and reckless endangerment for Helen. And obstruction of justice for Rebecca."
Just outside the kitchen window, through the sheer white curtains, I watched two uniformed officers place heavy steel handcuffs around my mother’s wrists.
Helen didn't scream anymore.
She just stared blankly at the ground as they led her toward the back of the patrol car, her pastel dress looking ridiculous against the harsh metal of the cruiser.

Rebecca was placed into a separate vehicle moments later, weeping hysterically as her polished social facade was stripped away by the cold reality of a jail cell.
The backyard baby shower was officially over.
