PART 5: The Airport Terminal Reception
Waiting families reveal the depth of care.
When the jet bridge finally docked and the forward exit doors slid open with a hiss of pressurized air, the passengers nearest the front paused to let Clara and Mr. Daniels exit first.
The flight attendant gently guided the old man up the aisle, with Clara walking right beside him, holding his arm and signing updates into his palm about every step they took toward the terminal.
As they emerged from the aircraft into the brightly lit arrival gate, a large group of people waving welcome signs instantly caught my eye.
At the center of the crowd stood a middle-aged couple and a young boy, looking frantically around the terminal exit until their eyes locked onto Mr. Daniels.
The woman—Mr. Daniels’ daughter—burst into tears, dropping her handbag to the floor as she rushed forward.
“Dad! Oh, thank God!” she cried, throwing her arms around the elderly man’s neck and burying her face in his tweed jacket.
Mr. Daniels recognized her familiar touch instantly, wrapping his arms around her tightly while a broad, emotional smile broke across his weathered face.
Behind her stood the young boy—Clara’s age—signing rapidly into the air with frantic relief.
