PART 4 – The Sister Who Thought She Was Being Replaced

PART 4 – The Sister Who Thought She Was Being Replaced
Richard drove faster than he ever had in his life.
The black convoy raced through the streets with police escorts clearing intersections, but every passing minute felt like an hour.
Beside him, Emily sat in stunned silence.
Only three hours earlier, she had been a homeless single mother begging to buy milk for her baby.
Now she had discovered her biological father...
...and learned she had a twin sister who had disappeared after reading a DNA report.
Nothing about this day made sense anymore.
When they reached Ashford Manor, dozens of security officers were already searching the sprawling estate.
Richard jumped from the SUV before it fully stopped.
"Search every building."
"The gardens."
"The lake."
"The guest house."
"Check every security camera."
"No one leaves until Olivia is found."
Everyone scattered.
Emily remained beside Noah's stroller, unsure whether she even belonged there.
One of the housekeepers approached quietly.
"Miss Emily..."
She hesitated before continuing.
"Miss Olivia has always been afraid of this day."
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The elderly woman sighed.
"She believed..."
"...that one day Mr. Ashford would find his missing daughter."
"And when that happened..."
"...he would stop loving her."
Richard overheard those words.
His shoulders slumped.
"It's my fault."
Emily looked at him.
He slowly nodded.
"After your mother disappeared..."
"I searched everywhere."
"For years."
"I hired investigators."
"I offered rewards."
"I even kept your nursery exactly the way it was."
He closed his eyes.
"Olivia grew up watching me search for someone she'd never met."
"I never realized..."
"...how lonely that made her feel."
Emily whispered,
"She thought she was second place."
Richard nodded without answering.
He didn't need to.
The truth was obvious now.
Meanwhile...
Inside Olivia's bedroom...
Detectives carefully searched every drawer.
Unlike the rest of the luxurious mansion, the room looked surprisingly ordinary.
Family photographs.
Books.
Sketchpads.
A piano beside the window.
One detective opened the bottom drawer of her desk.
Inside...
There were dozens of letters.
Every envelope carried the same name.
Emily.
None had ever been mailed.
Richard slowly picked one up.
His hands trembled.
"Should I read it?"
Emily nodded.
He unfolded the first page.
Dear Emily,
I don't know if you're alive.
Dad says you might be.
Every birthday, he lights two candles.
One for me.
One for you.
I pretend it doesn't hurt.
But sometimes...
I wish he'd only light one.
Richard couldn't continue.
His voice broke.
Emily gently took the letter.
There were dozens more.
One every year.
In another...
Olivia had written:
If we ever meet...
I hope you don't hate me.
Because I already feel guilty for surviving.
Emily wiped away tears she hadn't expected.
She had imagined an angry, spoiled rich girl.
Instead...
She found a lonely sister who had spent twenty-eight years competing with a ghost.
Then...
One of the security officers rushed inside.
"Sir!"
"We found her car."
"Where?"
"Cliffside Bridge."
Richard's heart nearly stopped.
Twenty minutes later...
Police lights reflected across the dark river below.
Olivia's silver sedan sat abandoned near the railing.
The driver's door was open.
Richard ran toward it.
"Olivia!"
No answer.
Divers were already preparing equipment.
Emily's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"Please..."
A patrol officer approached.
"We found this."
He handed Richard Olivia's phone.
On the screen...
An unsent voice recording.
Richard pressed play.
Olivia's trembling voice filled the night.
Dad...
I know you'll choose her.
You should.
She's your real daughter.
I was only the girl who stayed.
Richard collapsed against the bridge railing.
"No..."
"You were always my daughter..."
His voice echoed into the darkness.
Emily quietly picked up the phone.
Another recording appeared beneath the first.
This one...
Had never been opened.
The timestamp showed...
It had been recorded six months earlier.
Emily pressed play.
Olivia whispered:
If anyone ever finds Emily...
Tell her...
None of this is her fault.
I already loved her...
Before I even knew her name.
Emily burst into tears.
The sisters had never met.
Yet one had been writing letters to the other for years.
Just then...
A search helicopter circled lower.
Its spotlight suddenly stopped.
The pilot shouted through the loudspeaker.
"Movement!"
"North hiking trail!"
Everyone turned.
A small figure was walking slowly through the trees.
Barefoot.
Shivering.
Alive.
Richard ran faster than his body should have allowed.
"Olivia!"
The young woman looked up.
She froze when she saw Emily standing beside him.
For several long seconds...
The twin sisters simply stared at one another.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same face.
Separated for twenty-eight years.
United in one heartbreaking moment.
Olivia whispered through tears...
"So..."
"...you really came home."
Before Emily could answer...
Olivia suddenly collapsed onto the frozen ground.
Richard caught her just before she hit the earth.
A paramedic rushed forward.
After only seconds of examination...
His expression changed completely.
He looked directly at Richard.
"Sir..."
"We need an ambulance."
"Immediately."
Richard's voice shook.
"What's wrong with my daughter?"
The paramedic swallowed hard.
"It's not the cold."
"It's her heart."
"And according to the medical bracelet on her wrist..."
"She's been waiting for a transplant."
"For almost two years."
May you like
The night had reunited one daughter...
Only to reveal that Richard might lose the other.
