PART 5: Unwelcome Headlines in the Morning

PART 5: Unwelcome Headlines in the Morning

Tabloid scandals test fragile family bonds.

The next morning, the digital front pages of every major financial and tabloid news outlet in New England exploded with synchronized fury.

“BILLIONAIRE SCANDAL AT LAKE SHORE GALA: IS THE NEW VALE HEIR A FRAUD?”

“SERVER CLAIMS MULTI-BILLION-DOLLAR INHERITANCE: EXPERTS QUESTION GENEALOGICAL TIES.”

“DEBT, EVICTIONS, AND UNPAID BILLS: THE TROUBLED PAST OF ROSE BENNETT’S DAUGHTER.”

I sat at the kitchen island in Adrian’s sprawling penthouse overlooking Boston Harbor, staring in horror at my own face plastered across a gossip blog, accompanied by old public records detailing the utility shut-off notices and eviction warnings from our old apartment back when my mother’s cancer treatments drained every penny we owned.

Adrian walked into the kitchen carrying a fresh cup of black coffee, glancing at the tablet screen resting beside my plate.

“Don't read the tabloids, Rose,” Adrian said smoothly, setting the coffee down. “My legal team has already issued a takedown notice and filed defamation lawsuits against three syndication networks.”

“They have our old eviction notices, Adrian,” I said, my voice shaking as I pointed at the screen. “They’re making me look like a criminal who targeted your family on purpose. Look at what they’re saying about my mother... calling her a runaway con artist.”

Adrian rounded the counter, pulled out the stool beside me, and sat down, placing his hand firmly over mine.

“Let them bark,” Adrian said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a man who managed hostile corporate takeovers for breakfast. “Celeste is lashing out because she lost her meal ticket. Every single document they leaked proves one thing: you struggled, you survived, and you raised a brilliant little girl with dignity while my family lived in ignorance. That’s not a scandal. That’s a testament to your character.”

Just then, footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor.

Lucia walked into the kitchen, rubbing her sleepy eyes, still wearing her oversized pajama shirt and hugging her stuffed rabbit.

“Mommy? Are we still staying in the big castle?” Lucia asked sleepily.

I forced a warm, reassuring smile, scooping her up into my lap and kissing the top of her messy hair.

“We’re staying as long as we want, sweet girl,” I whispered.

Adrian watched us, a quiet, wistful look crossing his features—a silent promise that whatever corporate warfare Celeste Winthrop was waging outside these walls, nobody would ever touch my daughter again.
