PART 3: The Arrival of Emergency

PART 3: The Arrival of Emergency

Elite doctors ask dangerous questions.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed down the marble corridor outside just two minutes later.

Dr. Sterling, my personal physician and the only man authorized to handle medical emergencies within the syndicate without calling outside authorities, burst through the open doorway followed by two armed medical orderlays carrying trauma cases.

“Vance briefed me on the way, Boss,” Sterling said professionally, dropping to his knees beside Elena and snapping open a medical case. “Pulse is thready. Oxygen saturation is dropping fast. Give me the pediatric mask—she’s inhaled a heavy concentration of ammonia-based floor stripper.”

“Save her, Sterling,” I ordered coldly. “She dies, and we lose the answers to a twelve-year-old puzzle.”

One of the orderlies gently scooped Lily up into his arms, carrying her away from the frantic scene toward a small sofa in the corner while Sterling and his assistant went to work with rhythmic, precise medical intervention.

I stood watching from the doorway, my mind racing through a labyrinth of old betrayals and buried conspiracies.

If Marcus had survived the bombing twelve years ago, why hadn't he reached out to me?

Why had he hidden Elena away, and how did she end up working as a maid in the very fortress I commanded?

“Her airway is clearing,” Sterling announced after several agonizing minutes of compressions and oxygen administration. “She’s stabilizing, Boss. But she needs a proper intensive care setup. We need to move her to the underground medical wing immediately.”

“Do it,” I said.

As the orderlays lifted the stretcher bearing Elena’s unconscious form, Lily slipped away from the orderly holding her and ran straight toward me, grabbing the edge of my dark wool jacket with both hands.

“Is Mommy going to be okay?” she whispered, her big brown eyes swimming with terrified tears.

I looked down at the tiny girl, seeing the unmistakable structural set of her jaw—a physical trait shared by every male in my family for three generations.

The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow.

Lily wasn't just my housekeeper’s daughter.

She was my niece.

The Truth in the Underground Wing

Underground bunkers shelter forbidden bloodlines.

The subterranean medical wing beneath the main estate was designed for bullet wounds, poison antidotes, and surgeries that could never be reported to local health departments.

It was sterile, brightly lit with industrial halogen panels, and heavily guarded by my most trusted enforcers.

Elena lay on an automated hospital bed in Room 4, an oxygen mask strapped across her face, her chest rising and falling in a slow, rhythmic cadence as the heart monitor beeped steadily in the background.

Lily sat on a chair beside the bed, wrapped in a warm woolen blanket, quietly eating a cup of strawberry gelatin provided by one of the nurses.

I stood in the observation hallway outside the glass partition, leaning against the reinforced steel door frame with a dark scowl carved across my face.

Vance walked down the corridor, holding a thick, manila folder stamped with a red confidential seal.

“I ran the background check you requested on Elena Vance—excuse me, Elena Cross,” Vance reported, handing me the file. “She used her maiden name when she applied through our domestic agency three years ago. But her marriage certificate from ten years ago lists her legal spouse as Marcus Vance.”

I flipped open the folder.

There it was.

A legal marriage license dated two years after Marcus’s supposed death, registered in a small coastal town three states away.

“Marcus didn't die in that explosion,” I stated flatly, not asking a question.

“No, Boss,” Vance confirmed grimly. “He orchestrated it. He knew rival syndicates were closing in on our family, so he faked his death to protect his wife and unborn child. He lived off the grid for years under an alias, but two years ago... he was assassinated in a turf war in Chicago.”

My fists clenched so hard my knuckles turned white.

“And Elena?”

“She knew you were the only man powerful enough to keep her and her daughter safe from the men who killed Marcus,” Vance said. “She applied for the housekeeping position here because she knew you wouldn't run a deep background check on a domestic worker entering your own home. She was waiting for the right moment to tell you.”

I looked through the glass at Lily, who was now leaning her head against her sleeping mother’s arm.

For twelve years, I had believed I was the last living branch of a shattered family tree.

Now, a barefoot three-year-old girl had walked through my bedroom door at midnight, carrying the living proof of my brother’s survival and our family’s continuation.
