A barefoot three-year-old girl knocked on the most feared mafia boss’s bedroom door at midnight and whispered, “I need your help. My mommy won’t wake up.” I thought my maid had suffered a medical emergency somewhere inside my estate, until what I found beside her revealed that this little girl hadn’t come to my door by chance, and the reason reached years into a past I thought I had buried.

The first knock came at 11:59 p.m.

Three tiny taps.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Nobody disturbed me after ten.

Not my staff.

Not my family.

Not even the men who handled my security.

So when I heard a frightened little voice outside my bedroom, I was on my feet immediately.

“Hello?”

I opened the door.

A little girl stood barefoot on the cold marble.

I recognized her.

Lily, the three-year-old daughter of Elena, one of my housekeepers.

Her dark hair was tangled around a tear-streaked face. She wore a white nightgown covered in tiny yellow flowers and clutched a stuffed rabbit by one ear.

“I need your help, please.”

I looked down the empty hallway.

“Where’s your mother?”

Lily stared at me nervously.

“I can’t tell you when you’re like that.”

“Like what?”

She pointed upward.

“You’re too tall.”

For a moment, I simply stared at her.

Then I lowered myself onto one knee.

“Better?”

She nodded.

“My mommy is on the floor.”

Everything inside me went still.

“She won’t wake up. I shook her, but she only made a little sound.”

“Where is she?”

“In our room.”

I stood and held out my hand.

“Show me.”

Her tiny fingers disappeared inside mine.

We hurried through the silent east wing toward the staff quarters.

Elena’s door was open.

She was lying beside the bed.

“Elena.”

No response.

I reached for my phone to call the house doctor.

Then I noticed something beneath her hand.

An old photograph.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the man standing beside Elena in the picture.

My hand froze.

I knew that face.

I had watched his coffin lowered into the ground twelve years earlier.

And written across the back, in handwriting I recognized instantly, were five words:

If anything happens, find him.

I slowly turned toward Lily.

She hugged her rabbit against her chest.

“Mommy said you would help us.”

For the first time that night, I understood.

The emergency hadn't begun at midnight.

It had begun twelve years ago.

PART 2: Shadows in the Staff Quarters

Past ghosts walk through midnight hallways.

The heavy silence of the east wing felt suddenly suffocating as I knelt beside Elena’s motionless body on the carpeted floor.

Her skin was unnaturally cold, her breathing shallow and irregular, and a dark blue vial lay rolling loosely near her outstretched fingers.

A severe asthma attack compounded by acute chemical exposure, judging by the faint, sharp scent of industrial solvent lingering in the cramped room.

“Stay with your mother, Lily,” I instructed, my voice dropping into a calm, commanding tone that brooked no argument.

I pulled my encrypted satellite phone from my pocket and dialed a direct three-digit extension.

“Vance,” I said the instant the line connected. “Get Dr. Sterling to the east wing staff quarters immediately. Bring oxygen, emergency cardiac kits, and a full respiratory trauma unit. Do not wake the estate. Do it quietly.”

“On my way, Boss,” Vance replied without hesitation.

I clicked off the call and turned my attention back to the floor.

My gaze drifted down to the small, faded photograph Elena had been clutching when she collapsed.

My thumb brushed against the glossy paper, lifting it gently from the carpet.

The image had been taken over a decade ago in a modest diner far outside the city limits, back when the world knew me by a different name, before the blood, the bullets, and the throne.

Standing right beside a much younger Elena was my older brother, Marcus.

Marcus, whose state-sanctioned funeral I had attended twelve agonizing years ago, standing over a heavy iron casket after an explosion that was supposed to have erased our entire bloodline from the map.

I turned the photograph over.

The handwriting across the back was sharp, looping, and unmistakably my brother’s.

If anything happens, find him.

My breath caught in my throat as a wave of cold fury and bewildering disbelief crashed over my chest.

Elena wasn't just a random housekeeper hired through a standard domestic agency three years ago.

She had been planted here.

Or worse—she had been hiding right under my nose the entire time, carrying a secret that could tear my entire empire apart.
