PART 5 – The Last Piece of Bread

PART 5 – The Last Piece of Bread

A week later...

Sarah Collins was finally laid to rest.

The funeral was small.

Simple.

Quiet.

Robert carried his grandson in his arms.

Ethan didn't understand why everyone was crying.

He only kept asking,

"Is Mommy sleeping?"

When the ceremony ended...

Ethan slowly walked toward his mother's grave.

He carefully placed the small, dry piece of bread on the flowers.

"I waited..."

"...just like you said."

"I'm sorry it got hard."

"I couldn't keep it warm."

Robert broke down completely.

Everyone around them wiped away tears.

Months passed.

Robert sold his old house and devoted himself to raising Ethan.

Every Friday evening...

They returned to the same restaurant.

Not to remember the sadness...

But to honor Sarah's love.

Emily always prepared one extra basket of warm bread.

No charge.

One evening...

Ethan looked through the restaurant window.

Families were laughing together...

Just like before.

This time...

A gentle hand rested on his shoulder.

It was Robert.

"Ready to go home, buddy?"

Ethan smiled.

The little boy reached up and took his grandfather's hand.

"For a long time," Robert would later say, "I thought I had lost my daughter forever."

"But she still found a way to bring me home..."

"...through the little boy who never stopped waiting."

At the entrance of Brookstone Restaurant today hangs a small wooden plaque:

May you like

"No child should ever have to eat alone while waiting for someone who can no longer come home."

The End.
