PART 4: The Velvet Trap Closes
Arrogance ignores the writing on the wall.
Victoria took a half-step backward, her eyes narrowing as she tried to calculate whether my cold demeanor was the result of a bad business deal or a rumor circulating among my corporate rivals.
"Preston, you’re acting strange," Victoria said, forcing a nervous, brittle laugh as she smoothed down her dress. "Did something happen at the docks? Is one of your shipping contracts delayed?"
"My shipping contracts are fine, Victoria," I replied evenly, walking past her toward the mahogany sideboard where she had poured her champagne.
I picked up the crystal bottle, examined the vintage label for a fraction of a second, and set it back down without pouring a drop.
"Then why are you looking at me like that?" she demanded, her voice rising slightly with defensive indignation, losing its sweet, high-society cadence. "If you’re in a foul mood because of work, don't take it out on me! I’ve spent the entire day managing this estate, dealing with your mother’s endless medical demands, and planning a wedding that will put your name on the front page of every financial journal in the country!"
I turned slowly to face her.
"Managing the estate," I echoed. "Is that what you call locking my mother in a pantry, smashing my father’s framed photographs, and threatening my staff?"
The air was instantly sucked out of the room.
Victoria’s face drained of every drop of color, turning as white as a fresh sheet of bond paper.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out—only a shallow, ragged gasp of pure, unadulterated terror.
"P-pardon?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Twenty-three recordings, Victoria," I said, stepping closer to her with slow, measured strides. "That’s how many times my security system captured your true personality while I was away. Twenty-three masterclasses in bullying, elder abuse, and petty tyranny."
Panic exploded behind her eyes.
She looked frantically toward the hallway, then back at me, her hands beginning to tremble so violently she had to clasp them together behind her back to hide the shaking.
"You... you’re spying on me?" she shrieked, the mask completely shattering, revealing the vicious, cornered shrew underneath. "You put cameras in the private drawing rooms?! You don't trust your own fiancée?!"
"Trust is earned, Victoria. Betrayal is recorded," I stated, my voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp register that made her flinch. "And you didn't just betray my trust. You abused an elderly woman who raised me, and you assaulted a young woman under my employment."

"She was disrespectful! She didn't know her place!" Victoria screamed hysterically, abandoning all pretense of elegance as she stomped her high-heeled shoe against the floor. "And your mother is a senile old burden! Anyone would have lost their temper! You can't talk to me like this! I am marrying you next Saturday!"
"You aren't marrying anyone next Saturday," I said calmly. "Except perhaps a federal magistrate."
