PART 5: RECLAIMING THE EMPIRE

PART 5: RECLAIMING THE EMPIRE
True power is built, not inherited.
Six months after the arrests at the Pierre Hotel, the legal hammer fell on the Sterling family with merciless finality.
Faced with overwhelming digital evidence, sworn testimonies from forensic accountants, and the terrifying threat of RICO charges stemming from their dealings with predatory loan syndicates, Anthony and Eleanor entered guilty pleas to avoid maximum sentencing.
Eleanor Sterling was sentenced to seven years at a federal correctional facility for grand larceny and corporate forgery. Her high-society friends abandoned her instantly; not a single person visited her during her bail hearings. Her family's historic brownstone was foreclosed on, auctioned off on the courthouse steps to satisfy her millions in unpaid debt.
Anthony, convicted of felony embezzlement, extortion, and filing false federal reports, received five years in state prison.
On the day before he was transferred to the upstate facility, my office received a collect call from the Rikers Island holding center. I accepted the call, setting it on speaker while I reviewed my company's international expansion plans.
"Marissa..." Anthony’s voice sounded hollow, broken, and stripped of every ounce of the smug entitlement he had once carried. "Please... my lawyer says if you sign a victim impact mitigation waiver, the judge might reduce my sentence to three years probation. I can't survive in here, Marissa. Please."
I looked out my floor-to-ceiling office window at the city below, feeling no anger, no hatred, and no desire for petty vengeance. Just absolute, unyielding indifference.
"You told me once that your mother had connections I could never dream of," I said, my voice quiet and steady. "You told me I was just a commoner who got lucky. But you forgot one simple truth, Anthony."
The line was dead silent save for his ragged breathing.
"Luck doesn't build a billion-dollar company," I continued. "Work does. Character does. I offered you a clean break and a quiet life. You chose war. Now you get to live with the consequences."
"Marissa, wait—!"
I pressed the end button, permanently blocking the correctional facility's outgoing line.

An hour later, Sarah walked into my office holding a leather folder. "The board of directors just unanimously approved the acquisition of our European competitor, Marissa. You are officially heading the largest female-founded logistics network in North America."
I smiled, taking the pen, and signed my name across the final page—a signature that was entirely mine, backed by a fortune no parasite could ever steal again.
