PART 5: The Ledger of Blackmail

PART 5: The Ledger of Blackmail

Hidden documents expose a massive criminal conspiracy.

I reached down into the excavated trench, grabbed the heavy leather ledger stamped with Evelyn’s initials, and hauled it out into the bright light of the service hallway.

Norah stood nearby, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills spilling out of the velvet bank bags.

“Mr. Moretti... what is all that?” Norah whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“It’s Evelyn’s retirement fund,” I answered grimly, flipping open the leather cover of the ledger.

The pages were filled with meticulous, handwritten notes detailing far more than simple household supply inflation.

There were records of kickbacks from external catering vendors, extortion payments collected from former domestic staff who had been falsely accused of theft and forced to pay hush money to avoid police involvement, and systematic embezzlement listings routed through shell accounts registered in the Cayman Islands.

Worst of all, near the back of the ledger, was a dedicated section titled: Leverage Management.

It listed personal secrets, family vulnerabilities, and fabricated financial debt traps for nearly every high-ranking employee working inside the Moretti estate.

Evelyn hadn't just been a household manager.

She had been a domestic tyrant running a criminal enterprise inside my walls, exploiting my privacy, my absence, and my administrative trust to terrorize everyone around her.

And she had hidden her master archive directly beneath the entryway threshold, walking over it every single day, forcing a disabled four-year-old child to literally stumble over her hidden crimes.

“Marcus,” I said, looking up at the contractor.

“Yeah, boss?”

“Leave the cash and the passport box right where they are. I want forensics to pull every fingerprint off that metal before we touch it. But clear the rest of the threshold debris—I want that ramp poured and finished for Lily by sundown, do you hear me?”

“You got it, Mr. Moretti,” Marcus nodded firmly, returning to work with renewed urgency.

I closed the ledger, tucked it securely under my arm, and looked at Norah.

“Call Dante,” I instructed, my voice cold as ice. “Tell him Evelyn Crane didn't make it off the property. Tell him she’s hiding in the East Wing staff quarters trying to pack her personal server drives. And tell him I want her brought to my basement holding room before she takes another breath.”
