PART 4: The DNA Results Changed Every Life Forever

PART 4

The DNA Results Changed Every Life Forever

No one spoke when the laboratory director entered the conference room.

He carried two sealed envelopes.

One was labeled:

Noelle Bishop

The other:

Damian Marchetti

Behind the glass wall, the triplets were laughing as Noelle helped them stack colorful wooden blocks.

For the first time in their lives...

they looked like ordinary children.

Not frightened.

Not restless.

Not searching for something they couldn't explain.

Damian couldn't stop watching them.

He barely noticed the laboratory director clearing his throat.

"The DNA comparison has been completed."

He slid the reports across the table.

"You should prepare yourselves."

Damian broke the seal first.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

His breathing became uneven.

Across from him, Noelle opened hers.

She read one sentence.

Then another.

Suddenly...

the report slipped from her hands.

Tears blurred everything.

Victor quietly picked up the paper.

His own voice caught as he read aloud.

Probability of maternity: 99.999998%.

Noelle Bishop...

...was the biological mother of all three children.

There was no mistake.

No uncertainty.

No room for argument.

The babies she had mourned for fourteen months...

had never died.

Noelle covered her mouth.

"I knew it..."

"My heart knew."

She stumbled toward the nursery.

The little girl looked up immediately.

"Mama!"

This time...

No one questioned the word.

No one corrected her.

No one looked confused.

Three toddlers rushed toward Noelle together.

She dropped to her knees.

Holding them so tightly she thought she might never let go again.

"I searched for you..."

She sobbed.

"Every single night..."

"I talked to your pictures..."

"I told you I was sorry..."

The little boy gently touched her tears.

"Mama cry?"

She smiled through broken breaths.

"No..."

"Mama found you."

Across the room...

Damian stood perfectly still.

Victor slowly approached him.

"You should sit down."

Damian didn't move.

He was staring at the second page of the report.

The page everyone had forgotten.

His own DNA comparison.

He finally spoke.

Quietly.

"They're not mine."

Silence.

Not one child shared Damian Marchetti's DNA.

Not one.

For fourteen months...

he had loved them.

Protected them.

Stayed awake through fevers.

Learned their favorite lullabies.

Buried his wife believing these children were the last gift she had left him.

Now...

science had erased that belief.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally Noelle walked toward him.

Still holding the little girl.

"I'm sorry."

Damian slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You didn't do this."

He looked at the three children playing nearby.

"They're still my family."

Victor frowned.

"What?"

Damian smiled sadly.

"I taught that little boy to walk."

"The other one says my name before bed."

"The little girl falls asleep holding my finger."

He swallowed.

"DNA doesn't erase fourteen months."

Before anyone could answer...

Reyes burst into the room.

"We found Dr. Graves."

Everyone turned.

"He tried leaving the country."

"But federal agents stopped him at the airport."

Victor stood immediately.

"Bring him in."

Three hours later...

Dr. Leonard Graves sat inside an interrogation room.

Sweat covered his forehead.

He denied everything.

"I followed hospital policy."

"I never touched those babies."

Victor quietly placed the DNA reports on the table.

Then the nursery bracelet.

Then the missing surveillance records.

Then Margaret Ellis's sworn testimony.

Graves looked away.

Still silent.

Then Reyes placed one final photograph before him.

Richard Holloway.

The hospital owner.

Walking into the maternity wing...

twenty minutes before the cameras mysteriously failed.

Graves closed his eyes.

"It's over."

Victor leaned forward.

"Tell us everything."

For nearly four hours...

the doctor confessed.

Not because he suddenly found a conscience.

Because he knew the evidence was overwhelming.

Fourteen months earlier...

Richard Holloway had approached him with an impossible proposal.

A wealthy family.

A desperate situation.

A dying wife.

A husband who demanded healthy heirs.

At the same time...

another woman—

Noelle Bishop—

had delivered three perfectly healthy babies.

Both mothers were unconscious.

The cameras were off.

Money changed hands.

Hospital wristbands were switched.

Medical files were altered.

False death certificates were created.

Noelle's babies were placed into Damian's nursery.

But Victor interrupted.

"Why?"

Graves looked exhausted.

"Because they weren't supposed to stay with Damian forever."

The room froze.

"What do you mean?"

Graves whispered,

"There was another buyer."

Noelle felt her blood run cold.

"What buyer?"

Graves lowered his head.

"The triplets were meant to disappear overseas."

"Damian receiving them..."

"...was never part of the original plan."

Everyone stared.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Graves continued.

"Someone changed the orders at the last second."

Victor's voice became sharp.

"Who?"

The doctor answered one name.

A name that made even Reyes go pale.

"Richard Holloway's wife."

"Elizabeth."

"She couldn't let innocent children be sold."

"So she secretly redirected them..."

"...to the only powerful man she believed could protect them."

Damian closed his eyes.

For fourteen months...

he had believed fate had given him three children after losing Sophia.

Now he understood.

Someone inside the conspiracy...

had risked everything...

to save those babies.

But Victor wasn't listening anymore.

He was staring at another sentence buried deep inside Graves' confession.

Because if Noelle's triplets had been saved at the last second...

then the babies originally destined for Damian...

had still disappeared.

Somewhere...

three other children were still missing.

May you like

And whoever had bought them...

had never been caught.
