PART 5 — She Thought It Was Over

PART 5 — She Thought It Was Over

Three months after Sky wandered into her life, Sadie believed everything had finally settled.

The bookstore had become the happiest place she'd ever known. Children came after school to read on the colorful rugs. Elderly couples stopped by every Saturday just to pet Sky before buying mystery novels. Julian still visited almost every afternoon, pretending to "check the business," though everyone—including Sadie—knew he simply wanted to see her.

Life finally felt... normal.

Which was exactly when trouble returned.

It happened on a rainy Thursday morning.

Sadie was arranging new arrivals near the front window when Victor burst through the door.

His face was pale.

"Julian."

She looked up immediately.

"What happened?"

"He collapsed."

Everything inside her froze.

Twenty minutes later, Sadie rushed into St. Matthew Medical Center.

Victor met her outside the emergency room.

"He wouldn't let anyone call you."

"Why?"

"He said he didn't want to scare you."

Sadie almost laughed.

"He nearly dies and worries about scaring me?"

Victor lowered his eyes.

"He does that."

The doctor emerged nearly an hour later.

"Family?"

Sadie hesitated.

"I'm..."

Julian's wife.

The words caught in her throat.

Before she could answer, Victor spoke firmly.

"She's the person he wants."

The doctor nodded.

"He suffered severe exhaustion. High blood pressure. Extreme sleep deprivation."

Sadie blinked.

"Sleep deprivation?"

"He hasn't been sleeping for months."

When she entered the private room, Julian was already awake.

He smiled the moment he saw her.

"I told Victor not to bother you."

Sadie didn't answer.

She walked to the bedside.

Then gently took his hand.

"It's not your decision."

His smile faded.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For making you worry."

Tears burned behind her eyes.

"You idiot."

He actually laughed.

"You carried a one-hundred-and-fifty-pound dog across a ballroom."

She squeezed his hand harder.

"And I'd carry you too if I had to."

That afternoon Dr. Park arrived carrying Sky.

Hospital policy normally prohibited animals.

Apparently no one argued with Julian Croft.

Sky carefully rested his giant head on the edge of the bed.

Julian smiled for the first time all day.

"Missed me?"

Sky answered with one slow tail thump.

Sadie folded her arms.

"I think he's disappointed."

Julian frowned.

"Why?"

"You forgot to take care of yourself."

Sky gave another thump.

Dr. Park laughed.

"I believe that's agreement."

Later that evening, after Victor and Dr. Park left, the room became quiet.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

Julian stared toward the ceiling.

"I've spent most of my life believing I was responsible for everyone."

"You are."

"I forgot someone."

She looked at him.

"Myself."

He turned toward her.

"If something happened to me..."

She interrupted immediately.

"Don't."

"I need to say this."

She slowly nodded.

"I kept thinking that protecting everyone meant carrying every burden alone."

"It doesn't."

"I know that now."

Sadie moved closer.

She brushed a strand of hair away from his forehead.

"You know what the strongest people do?"

"What?"

"They let someone help."

For the first time in years...

Julian allowed himself to lean against someone else.

Not because he was weak.

Because he finally trusted someone enough to stop pretending he never was.

Across the room, Sky watched quietly.

Then closed his eyes.

As if Leo's old friend already knew...

the hardest battle Julian Croft would ever fight wasn't against enemies.

It was learning that love meant sharing the weight instead of carrying it alone.
