Part 4 – The Secret Was Never About the Poison… It Was About the Romano Empire

Part 4 – The Secret Was Never About the Poison… It Was About the Romano Empire

The dining room became impossibly quiet.

Judge Lorenzo Moretti slowly opened the worn brown file.

His hands—steady for decades on the bench—shook for the first time.

Alessandro looked down at the faded photograph.

His father.

Chef Lorenzo.

A little blonde girl.

And another man whose face had been deliberately scratched away.

"What am I looking at?"

The judge took a slow breath.

"Your father asked me to keep this hidden until the day he believed you were ready."

"He prayed that day would never come."

Alessandro frowned.

"What secret?"

The judge looked toward Isabella.

"The woman you intended to marry..."

"...is not who she claims to be."

Isabella laughed.

A short, controlled laugh.

"This is absurd."

"A dead chef..."

"A frightened child..."

"Now old photographs?"

She folded her arms.

"You expect him to believe this?"

Judge Moretti ignored her.

Instead, he handed Alessandro another document.

It was a birth certificate.

Or rather...

Half of one.

The upper corner had been burned away.

Only one name remained completely visible.

Isabella Conti.

Alessandro looked up.

"I already know her maiden name."

"No."

The judge's voice was calm.

"You know the name she was given."

"You don't know the family she was born into."

Carlo's expression slowly changed.

He recognized another document inside the folder.

A police report.

Dated twenty-six years earlier.

Subject:

Massimo Conti.

The name alone made every guard in the room exchange nervous glances.

Massimo Conti.

The last surviving leader of the Conti Syndicate.

The only organization powerful enough to challenge the Romanos during the old mafia wars.

Officially...

Massimo had died in a warehouse fire twenty-five years ago.

Unofficially...

No body had ever been recovered.

Alessandro slowly lifted his eyes toward Isabella.

"Tell me I'm wrong."

She didn't answer.

Instead...

She smiled.

Not warmly.

Not lovingly.

Coldly.

"You finally asked the right question."

Emma instinctively grabbed Alessandro's sleeve.

The little girl didn't understand organized crime.

She didn't understand syndicates.

She only knew the nice lady's smile had disappeared.

It frightened her.

Alessandro quietly placed a reassuring hand over hers.

"It's alright."

But he wasn't speaking to Emma.

He was speaking to himself.

Judge Moretti continued.

"Twenty-five years ago..."

"Your father ended the war."

"Not by killing Massimo."

"By making a secret agreement."

Alessandro stared.

"What agreement?"

"The children."

Silence.

"The surviving children of both families would never be harmed."

"They would disappear."

"They would receive new identities."

"They would never know each other."

Carlo whispered,

"My God..."

The judge nodded.

"Your father honored that promise."

"Massimo didn't."

He turned another page.

"Twelve years ago..."

"Someone began searching for you."

"Patiently."

"Quietly."

"They studied your routines."

"Your business."

"Your security."

"And eventually..."

His eyes settled on Isabella.

"They placed their own daughter beside you."

Alessandro looked directly at Isabella.

"Is it true?"

For several seconds...

She said nothing.

Then she slowly reached into her handbag.

Every weapon in the room was raised instantly.

Carlo shouted,

"Don't move!"

She smiled sadly.

"I'm not reaching for a gun."

She removed a small leather wallet.

Inside...

Was another faded photograph.

This one showed a little dark-haired girl sitting beside the very same man whose face appeared scratched from the judge's picture.

"My father."

She looked at Alessandro.

"Massimo Conti."

Emma hid behind Alessandro's chair.

The room suddenly felt much larger.

Much colder.

"I didn't know who you were when we first met," Isabella said quietly.

"That part was real."

"I was told only one thing."

"Earn your place."

"Earn your trust."

"When the time comes..."

"Finish what our fathers started."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"So you spent three years pretending to love me."

She closed her eyes.

"It stopped being pretend."

Nobody spoke.

Even Carlo lowered his weapon slightly.

Because for the first time...

Isabella sounded heartbroken.

"I tried to walk away."

"I told my father I couldn't do it."

"He laughed."

"He reminded me what happens to people who disappoint him."

She looked toward the doorway leading to the kitchen.

"Lorenzo heard us arguing last night."

"He told me to run."

"He said Alessandro deserved the truth."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I refused."

Alessandro's voice became almost a whisper.

"So who killed him?"

Isabella looked genuinely confused.

"I thought..."

Her breathing became uneven.

"I thought he was unconscious."

Judge Moretti immediately looked at Carlo.

"She doesn't know."

Before anyone could react...

One of the security guards burst into the dining room.

"Boss!"

"What?"

"We reviewed the exterior cameras."

Carlo turned.

"And?"

"The man who entered last night..."

"...wasn't working alone."

He placed a tablet on the table.

The frozen image showed a tall man in black gloves leaving the kitchen shortly after midnight.

Standing beside him...

Was another figure.

An elderly man wearing a long black coat.

Judge Moretti looked at the screen...

And the color drained from his face.

"No..."

Alessandro noticed immediately.

"You know him."

The judge slowly nodded.

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"That's impossible."

"Because I attended his funeral..."

"...twenty years ago."

He pointed at the second man.

"That is Massimo Conti."

"And if he's alive..."

"He didn't send Isabella here merely to poison you."

May you like

"He sent her here..."

"...to inherit the Romano empire from the inside."
