PART 5: Rebuilding Our Own Foundation

PART 5: Rebuilding Our Own Foundation

True love requires no financial collateral.

Two weeks after the Thanksgiving disaster, Daniel and I hosted a quiet, intimate dinner party at his penthouse for a select few people who actually mattered.

There were no toxic relatives, no manipulative demands, and no social climbers looking to secure a business favor over roasted turkey.

Just my Aunt Marcy and Uncle Steven—the only two members of my extended family who had quietly called me during the chaos to check if I was safe—along with a couple of Daniel’s closest, most grounded friends from the legal sector.

Aunt Marcy brought a homemade apple pie, exactly like the ones she used to sneak me under the dining table when my mother was busy scolding me for not being more like Vivian.

As we sat around the dining table laughing, sharing stories, and passing bowls of food without a single passive-aggressive remark or insult, I looked across at Daniel.

He caught my eye, raised his glass of wine in a silent toast, and smiled warmly.

"To new beginnings," Uncle Steven said, standing up and lifting his glass toward us. "And to building a family based on real love instead of conditional ledgers."

"To new beginnings," we all echoed, clinking our glasses together in unison.

After dinner, while our guests were chatting on the terrace, Daniel pulled me gently into his arms near the balcony doors, resting his chin softly on the top of my head.

"How are you holding up with everything happening with your parents?" he asked quietly, his voice full of genuine concern.

"Honestly, Daniel? I feel lighter every single day," I murmured, burying my face against his chest. "I used to think that if I just tried harder, achieved more, and stayed quiet enough, they would finally love me the way they loved Vivian. But I realize now that their love was never real. It was just a transaction."

"And you were never a transaction to me, Claire," Daniel whispered, pressing a tender kiss into my hair. "You are my entire world."

The ghosts of my past family were fading into the background, losing their power over my emotions, replaced by the warm, unshakable reality of a future built entirely on mutual respect and unconditional devotion.
