Part 7

The empire reclaims its soul.

Two days after the storm on the highway, the Sun burst through the Manhattan skyline, painting the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse office in warm, golden light.

The news channels were in a complete frenzy. The headlines of every major paper from New York to London blared the same story: “Vance Capital Mastermind Uncovers Cartel Syndicate: Billionaire’s Ex-Wife and Security Chief Arrested in Federal Sting.” Victoria’s mugshot was plastered across every screen, her pristine image shattered beyond repair.

I sat behind my mahogany desk, watching the live broadcast of federal agents seizing her offshore bank accounts and freezing her assets worldwide. The corporate board members who had conspired with her were currently being rounded up by the FBI, one by one.

The door to my private office opened softly.

Standing in the doorway was Eleanor. She looked thinner than I remembered, her face worn by seven long years of living in the shadows under witness protection, but her eyes—those sharp, brilliant hazel eyes—were filled with life.

Beside her, holding her hand, was Lily, wearing a clean yellow sunburst dress and a big smile.

I stood up so fast my leather chair knocked against the glass behind me. For a moment, neither of us said a word. The years of pain, grief, and separation seemed to melt away in the quiet room.

"Julian," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling.

I walked over and pulled her into a tight, fierce embrace. She buried her face in my shoulder, weeping softly, as Lily wrapped her arms around both of our legs.

"I thought I lost you forever," I murmured, holding my sister tighter. "I searched everywhere, Eleanor. I never gave up."

"I know," she sobbed, stepping back to cup my face in her hands. "Agent Vance kept me updated whenever he could. But Victoria had eyes everywhere. The only way to keep Lily safe was to stay dead until we had enough proof to tear her network down."

"She's gone now," I said firmly. "Her, Marcus, the board... all of them. They'll spend the rest of their lives in a federal penitentiary."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small velvet box I had brought back from the crime scene. Opening it, the Sapphire Serpent necklace shimmered under the office lights.

"I bought this years ago with the money from our father's company," I said, looking at Eleanor. "I thought it represented success. But it was bought with blood and lies."

"What are you going to do with it, Uncle Julian?" Lily asked, peering up at the sparkling blue stone.

I smiled down at my niece, taking her small hand. "We're going to liquidate it, along with every single asset Victoria tried to steal. We're creating the Eleanor & Lily Foundation to help missing children and victims of human trafficking."

Eleanor's eyes filled with fresh tears, but this time, they were tears of joy. She squeezed my hand tightly.

Suddenly, my desk phone buzzed with an urgent line from the federal detention center. The screen indicated a call from Victoria’s court-appointed attorney.

I pressed the speaker button. "Speak."

"Mr. Vance," the attorney's voice sounded grim. "Your ex-wife is demanding to speak with you. She claims she has one final piece of information about your father's death... something that wasn't in the Interpol files."
