PART 7: The Untouchable Guardian

PART 7: The Untouchable Guardian
An unbreakable shield guards the future.
As evening settled over Manhattan, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets of Greenwich Village, the bakery doors were finally locked for the night.
The staff had gone home, leaving the warm, amber glow of the interior lights reflecting off the display cases.
I stood behind the counter, wiping down the marble surface with a clean cloth, breathing in the comforting scent of vanilla and roasted coffee.
The heavy front door chimed softly as it opened, and Vincent stepped inside, locking the deadbolt behind him.
He walked slowly across the polished floor, stopping right in front of the counter.
“You had a very successful opening day,” Vincent noted, his dark eyes scanning the empty, sparkling dining room with genuine pride. “The financial reports from your manager show you sold out of every single pastry by 3:00 P.M.”
“We almost ran out of flour,” I laughed, untying my apron and setting it aside. “It’s overwhelming... but in the best possible way.”
Vincent reached across the counter, taking my hand in his large, warm grip.
“You earned every bit of this, Lena,” he said quietly, his voice carrying a resonant warmth that went straight to my heart. “Your mother would have been so proud of the woman you’ve become.”
I stepped around the counter, closing the distance between us, resting my uninjured hand against the lapel of his blazer.
“And I wouldn't even be standing here if you hadn't answered my call that night,” I whispered. “You kept your promise. You reached me in eight minutes.”
Vincent looked down at me, a rare, tender smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“I would have crossed fire to reach you in four, Lena,” he said softly.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick black business card—the exact same heavy cardstock with gold lettering he had handed me months ago at the diner, except this time, the back was blank.
“You don't need this card anymore,” Vincent said, sliding it gently across the marble counter. “Because you’re never alone again.”
I picked up the card, smiling as I looked up into the eyes of the man the entire city feared, knowing that beneath that intimidating exterior beat the heart of my most loyal protector.

The nightmare in the brownstone was a million miles away.
My hands were steady, my future was bright, and under the watchful gaze of Vincent Moretti, I was finally, completely untouchable.
