PART 7: Checkmate

PART 7: Checkmate
The game ends when the queen moves.
Two years after the gala, the quiet certainty of my life remained as solid and unyielding as granite.
At fifty-two, I had officially transitioned the daily operations of the Vance Corporation to Leo, who had proved himself to be a brilliant, ethical, and formidable Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, the firm expanded into green energy and international infrastructure, cementing our family’s legacy for another generation.
I spent my days guiding the foundation, traveling, and enjoying the peaceful sanctuary of my home.
On a sun-drenched Sunday morning in May, I sat in the glass sunroom of the Bel-Air estate, drinking fresh Earl Grey tea while reading the weekend business journal.
Mrs. Higgins walked in, setting a small wooden box on the marble table beside my chair.
"What is this, Mrs. Higgins?" I asked with a warm smile.
"Master Leo asked me to bring this up from the study, ma'am," she replied, her eyes twinkling with quiet humor. "He said it belongs right here."
I opened the wooden box.
Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was the hand-carved wooden chess queen—the very piece Leo had set on my coffee table the night he broke into my room to free me.
I picked up the heavy wooden queen, feeling the smooth, carved lines beneath my fingers.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I watched Leo walking across the terrace with his senior management team, discussing plans for our upcoming European expansion. He was strong, confident, and utterly unbroken.
I set the wooden queen down on the marble table, right beside my teacup.
Julian and Natalie had thought they could isolate a grieving woman, steal her wealth, and erase her name. They had treated a human life like a simple board game they could cheat to win.
They had forgotten that in the game of life, you never target the queen unless you are prepared for checkmate.

I took a slow sip of my tea, leaned back against the plush cushions, and looked out over the bright, beautiful city below.
The sun was high. The estate was peaceful. And the victory was complete.
