PART 3 — The Safety Deposit Box

PART 3 — The Safety Deposit Box

Victoria took another slow step toward me.

Her designer heels clicked softly against the hardwood floor.

"You think that little key changes anything?"

Her voice remained calm.

Almost amused.

But I noticed something she couldn't hide.

Her eyes never left my hand.

The hand holding the tiny silver key.

That meant one thing.

Whatever was inside that safety deposit box...

Terrified her.

I wrapped my arm around Chloe.

"You should leave."

Victoria smiled.

"I don't think you understand."

Behind her, two enormous men stepped into my apartment.

Neither wore security uniforms.

Neither looked like bodyguards.

They looked like men who solved problems permanently.

"I can make this very easy," Victoria said.

"Give me the key."

"I'll pretend tonight never happened."

"You and your daughter can continue your quiet little lives."

I looked at Chloe.

She was trembling.

Holding the rag doll against her chest.

The same doll that had completely changed our lives.

"I don't negotiate with people who break into children's bedrooms."

Victoria sighed.

"I was hoping you'd say something smarter."

One of the men reached forward.

Before he could touch me—

Police sirens exploded outside.

Victoria's head snapped toward the window.

Blue and red lights flooded the apartment.

The men immediately stepped back.

"What did you do?"

"I called 911."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I called someone else."

Her eyes narrowed.

At that exact moment...

Someone pounded on the apartment door.

"FBI!"

"Open the door!"

Victoria's face went completely white.

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

Very afraid.

One of her men whispered,

"We have to leave."

"No."

Victoria clenched her jaw.

"They can't know I'm here."

The apartment door burst open.

Agents flooded inside.

Weapons raised.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

An older man stepped through the doorway.

Gray suit.

Silver badge.

Sharp blue eyes.

He looked directly at Victoria.

"Victoria Sterling."

"Federal warrant."

"You're under arrest."

She laughed.

"You have nothing."

The agent smiled.

"Actually..."

He looked toward me.

"We've been waiting three years."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

He introduced himself.

"Special Agent Daniel Ross."

He reached into his jacket and removed a folder.

"Harrison Walker contacted our office twenty-eight months ago."

"He became a confidential informant."

I couldn't process the words.

"Harrison... worked with the FBI?"

Ross nodded.

"He infiltrated Sterling Enterprises after discovering financial crimes."

"He was gathering evidence."

"He disappeared before he could deliver everything."

Victoria screamed.

"He's lying!"

Ross ignored her.

"He managed to smuggle fragments of evidence out."

"The doll was only one piece."

He looked at the silver key.

"That key unlocks the final piece."

Victoria lunged toward me.

"Give me the key!"

Agents tackled her before she reached us.

She fought wildly.

Screaming.

Kicking.

Her perfect image shattered completely.

As they dragged her away...

She looked directly at me.

"You think opening that box saves him?"

A horrible smile spread across her face.

"You're already too late."

Then she laughed.

A laugh so cold...

It echoed through the apartment long after she disappeared.

The following morning...

Agent Ross drove Chloe and me downtown.

The First Los Angeles Trust stood like an old stone fortress.

The silver key fit perfectly into Box 317.

Inside...

There wasn't money.

There weren't jewels.

There were documents.

Hard drives.

Passports.

Medical records.

Dozens of signed contracts.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front...

In Harrison's handwriting...

It simply read:

For Sarah Only.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Sarah...

If you're reading this, then I failed to come home.

I deserve your anger.

Probably your hatred too.

Leaving you was the greatest mistake of my life.

But marrying Victoria wasn't love.

It was survival.

After discovering what her family was really doing, they gave me two choices.

Marry her.

Or disappear forever.

I thought I could expose them from the inside.

Instead...

They trapped me.

Every day I regretted losing you and Chloe.

Every single day.

Tears blurred the page.

The letter continued.

Everything you need is in this box.

The recordings.

The financial records.

The names.

If I'm still alive...

Please find me.

If I'm dead...

Tell Chloe that her father loved her more than he ever found the courage to show.

I folded the letter.

Unable to speak.

Then Agent Ross opened one of the hard drives.

His expression changed instantly.

"What is it?"

He looked directly at me.

"This isn't financial fraud."

May you like

"It's much bigger."

"Much... much bigger."
