PART 3: Uncovering the Greedy Motives

PART 3: Uncovering the Greedy Motives
Inheritance talks mask cold-blooded premeditation.
Three weeks earlier, Daniel had cornered me in the kitchen of my estate, demanding to know why I had met privately with my estate attorney.
Vanessa had immediately followed up with aggressive questions about my house, my voting shares, and whether young Caleb’s trust fund could be legally controlled directly by his parents rather than an independent corporate trustee.
At the time, I had shut down the conversation and refused to discuss my final wishes, sensing a sudden greed that felt entirely out of character.
Now, lying bleeding in the dirt beneath a forgotten cliff, I knew precisely why they had brought me to this isolated mountain peak.
They hadn't wanted a family bonding trip; they had wanted a convenient disappearance that left no witnesses behind and instantly consolidated their wealth.
Beside me on the damp earth, Caleb’s tiny fingers suddenly twitched.
A soft, terrified whimper escaped his lips, threatening to give away our survival.
Everything above us on the trail went completely, deathly silent as they strained to listen.
Then Daniel whispered a sentence that made my heart leap into my throat: "He’s alive."
Above us, Vanessa’s shoes scraped sharply against the loose gravel, her impatience overriding any remaining shred of human conscience.
"Then go down there," she hissed.
"What?" Daniel stammered back, hesitation creeping into his voice.
"Make sure he can’t talk."
I kept my eyes tightly closed as Daniel began clumsily searching for a way down the steep embankment.
Branches shook violently above us, and small pebbles bounced past my face, rattling against the rocks.
Caleb whimpered again, fighting against consciousness.
Without lifting my injured arm, I carefully slid my thumb beneath my torn wool sleeve to feel for my wrist.
My smartwatch screen was severely cracked from the impact, but it still glowed faintly with life.
The automatic fall-detection alert was flashing on the display, waiting for a user response.
The Secret Distress Signal
Cracked watch screens become lifelines.
I pressed the emergency button on the side of the watch and held it down firmly.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The watch vibrated sharply against my wrist, acknowledging the manual override command and transmitting our telemetry data.
Call connected, the tiny digital interface flashed in the dim light.
I had no way of knowing whether anyone on the other end could actually hear us through the howling mountain wind, or if the cellular signal would even penetrate the thick canopy of trees.
I only knew that Vanessa was actively descending toward us and my innocent grandson could not protect himself from his own father.
Daniel reached the lower slope first, grabbing desperately onto a thick tree root to steady himself on the shale.
His face was ghostly pale as he peered through the brush, and for a terrifying second, he saw me looking right back at him.
He froze in his tracks.
In that split second of eye contact, I didn't see my son anymore.
I saw a monster who was willing to let his own mother and child die a brutal death for a corporate legacy he never truly earned.
"Daniel, what are you waiting for?!" Vanessa’s shrill, impatient voice echoed down aggressively from the ledge above.
She was carefully sliding down the steep dirt embankment behind him, clutching a heavy, jagged rock in her gloved hand.
"Do it! Pick up a stone and end it, or I will!" she shrieked.
Daniel looked down at my bleeding face, then glanced over at Caleb, who was beginning to stir, crying softly for his mother.
But his mother was descending the cliffside with absolute murder in her eyes.

"Mom..." Daniel whispered, his lower lip trembling uncontrollably.
He reached down toward a heavy wooden branch resting on the forest floor.
