PART 6: Playing Back the Truth

PART 6: Playing Back the Truth

High-definition footage destroys elaborate lies.

"Michael! Thank God," Olivia wailed, rushing across the room to fling her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder. "She took it! I left my diamond bracelet on the coffee table, and when I came back, it was missing! She must have hidden it on her way to the basement!"

Michael stood completely rigid, not returning her embrace.

He gently pried her fingers off his shoulders, his expression carved from gray stone.

"Olivia," Michael said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. "Are you absolutely certain she stole it?"

"Of course I'm certain!" Olivia snapped, her panic flaring behind her tears. "Call the police! Search her quarters! Look at her!"

"There's no need for the police," Michael replied calmly. "And there's no need to search her room."

He pulled his smartphone from his breast pocket, tapped the screen twice, and pressed the casting button toward the smart television mounted above the fireplace.

The high-definition video feed from the cherrywood bookcase instantly flashed onto the screen.

The time stamp in the corner read 3:46 PM.

On screen, Olivia was clearly visible entering the room, sending Sophie away to the basement, unclasping her diamond bracelet, and deliberately shoving it deep beneath the heavy cushion of the sofa before turning around to manufacture her hysterical outburst.

The high-fidelity audio captured every whisper, every fabricated gasp, and every venomous accusation with crystal clarity.

The living room fell into a tomb-like silence.

Margaret stared up at the television screen, her mouth open in absolute shock and disgust.

Sophie stood frozen by the fireplace, tears streaming silently down her cheeks as she watched the incontrovertible proof of the trap laid out before her.

Olivia spun around to look at the screen.

The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse in a bridal gown.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

"What... what is this?" Olivia whispered, her voice cracking horribly. "You... you spied on me?"

"I protected my home," Michael corrected, his voice slicing through the room like a razor blade. "And I exposed a monster."
