PART 6: The Freedom of Denver

PART 6: The Freedom of Denver

One year later, the moving truck was parked in our driveway.

We had sold the house in the suburbs—the house that carried too many memories of hospital visits, whispered threats, and shadowy family secrets. My promotion to head of regional operations in Denver had been held for me, and today was the day we were finally leaving for Colorado.

The sun was rising over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and gold.

Sarah walked out onto the front porch wearing a warm sweater, holding two travel mugs of coffee. She handed one to me, stepping up beside me to look at the empty house one last time.

"Are you going to miss it?" I asked softly, putting my arm around her waist.

Sarah took a slow, deep breath of the morning air—a breath unburdened by fear, unpolluted by guilt, and entirely her own.

"No," Sarah smiled, looking at me with clear, bright eyes. "My life didn't start in this house, Ethan. My life started the day you opened that purse."

Lily ran out the front door, holding her favorite backpack, her pink sneakers light on the porch steps. "Dad! Mom! The movers said we're ready to go!"

"Then let's go home, kiddo," I smiled.

We piled into the SUV, starting the engine. As we pulled out of the driveway and onto the open highway leading west toward the mountains, I looked in the rearview mirror.

The past was shrinking into a tiny, powerless speck behind us. Ahead of us was three thousand miles of open road, blue skies, and a future built on truth, love, and a promise that would never be broken.
