PART 5: The Forensic Discovery

PART 5: The Forensic Discovery
When a house burns, the foundation reveals its hidden rot.
Two weeks after the gala, the legal fallout from Jared’s reckless tenure at Sterling & Associates reached its terrifying climax.
I was sitting in my new, sunlit corner office on the top floor of the Vance Tower, reviewing our Q3 operational expansion, when my attorney, Evelyn, walked in holding a thick red folder marked CONFIDENTIAL - FEDERAL SUBPOENA.
"It's worse than we thought, Annalise," Evelyn said, taking a seat across from my desk and opening the file. "The forensic accounting team Arthur hired to audit Jared's department finished their preliminary investigation yesterday."
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the polished glass desk. "What did they find?"
"Jared wasn't just mismanaging expense accounts," Evelyn revealed, her tone razor-sharp. "For the last eighteen months, he had been operating an offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'PK Holdings'—Parker-Sterling Holdings."
I nheo mắt. "He named his embezzlement vehicle after himself and his intern?"
"He did," Evelyn confirmed. "He funneled over $2.1 million in client retainer overpayments away from Sterling & Associates into this account. He was preparing to bleed his uncle's firm dry, declare corporate bankruptcy, and flee to South America with Kiera once your wedding was finalized."
A cold, heavy breath escaped my lips. The full, sickening scope of his sociopathy laid itself bare.
He hadn't just taken my airplane seat. He hadn't just stolen my pitch deck. He had been planning to marry me, use my personal credit and inheritance to absorb the liability of his financial crimes, and then abandon me to face the legal fallout while he escaped with his mistress.
"Does Arthur know?" I asked.
"Arthur was the one who handed the files to the Department of Justice," Evelyn said. "He realized that if he didn't report Jared immediately, the entire firm would be indicted as a co-conspirator. Federal warrants were issued two hours ago."
At 4:00 PM, my desk phone rang. It was a call from the Fulton County Detention Center.
I accepted the call and placed it on speaker.
"Annalise?" Jared’s voice sounded entirely unrecognisable. It was raspy, broken, and hyperventilating. "Annalise... please... you have to help me. They arrested me at my mother's house this morning. The FBI... they took my passport, my phone, everything!"
I sat back in my leather chair, looking out at the sweeping panorama of the Atlanta skyline. "You brought this on yourself, Jared."
"It was Kiera!" he sobbed hysterically into the receiver, the loud echoes of jail cell doors slamming in the background. "She persuaded me! She told me her father had offshore connections! She told me we could set up our own agency in South America! She set up the Cayman accounts! She manipulated me, Annalise!"
"Jared," I said, my voice dropping into a register of absolute, icy calm. "Kiera is twenty-three years old. You were a Vice President at a major regional firm. You signed the wire transfers. You forged Arthur's administrative security bypass. You chose to betray every person who ever trusted you."
"I have no bail!" he shrieked. "The judge declared me a flight risk because of the offshore accounts! My mother won't speak to me! Uncle Arthur revoked my legal defense trust! Annalise, please... I know I hurt you on the plane... I know I was cruel... but I loved you! Five years must mean something!"
"Five years meant that I built a career while you built a prison sentence," I replied smoothly. "Do not call this number again."
I pressed the end button, cutting off his desperate, wailing cries.
Ten minutes later, Evelyn sent me a news update link.
Kiera Parker had been taken into custody at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport while attempting to board a one-way flight to Cancun using a fraudulent passport. She had been carrying $40,000 in cash—money she had stolen directly from Jared's personal safe before he was arrested.
The two parasites had turned on each other, tearing their own fragile world apart in a desperate frenzy of self-preservation.

I closed the news article, picked up my pen, and returned to reviewing my firm's multi-million-dollar quarterly revenue forecast.
The air in my office was clean, pure, and entirely mine.
