PART 6: The Arraignment Verdict
Courtroom gavels shatter generational abuse.
Two weeks later, the federal district courthouse downtown was packed to capacity for the formal arraignment and bail hearing of Raymond and Stephanie.
I didn't attend.
I didn't need to sit in a hard wooden gallery bench to watch my father realize that his arrogance had finally hit a brick wall.
Instead, I stayed home with Ashley, watching the live courtroom feed stream securely onto our living room television.
Raymond looked older, smaller, and utterly defeated in his orange jumpsuit, his hair unbrushed, staring blankly at the defense table as the federal prosecutor laid out the comprehensive evidence packet detailing their years of corporate embezzlement and domestic abuse.
Stephanie sat beside him, weeping hysterically into her cuffed hands, screaming that her civil rights were being violated as the judge denied bail due to extreme flight risk.
The federal judge, a stern-faced woman with decades of bench experience, didn't even blink at their theatrics.
"The level of calculated greed, financial manipulation, and callous disregard for vulnerable family members displayed by the defendants is appalling," the judge declared, her voice ringing clearly through our television speakers. "Bail is denied. Both defendants are remanded to federal custody pending trial."
Thud.
The heavy gavel struck the wooden block, sealing their fate with absolute finality.
Ashley reached out, resting her warm hand over mine on the armrest.
"It's over," she whispered softly.
"It's over," I agreed, turning to look at her with a gentle smile.

There was no lingering sadness in the room.
Only a clean, brilliant horizon stretching out before us, untainted by the ghosts of our past.
