PART 5: The Unbreakable Line

PART 5: The Unbreakable Line

Billionaire protection redraws personal boundaries.

I stared at Julian, caught somewhere between sheer terror and a sudden, reckless wave of warmth.

He wasn't joking.

He looked entirely capable of buying an airline just to deport my ex-boyfriend to the Arctic circle.

“As tempting as the Alaska mining outpost sounds,” I said, letting out a small, breathless laugh, “I don't want him taking up another second of my mental real estate. Blocking his number is punishment enough.”

Julian studied my face for a long moment, searching for any lingering hesitation, any crack in my resolve.

Finding none, the tension in his shoulders slowly eased.

“As you wish,” he murmured, taking a sip of his coffee. “Though my offer stands indefinitely.”

“I know,” I smiled softly, looking back out toward the harbor where cargo ships moved like silent giants across the dark water. “Thank you, Julian. For... everything. Not just the Alaska threat. For believing in my work. For giving me a chance when I walked into your boardroom looking like a disaster.”

Julian turned his head, his gray eyes softening as he looked down at me.

“You weren't a disaster, Eve,” he said quietly, his voice dropping an octave. “You were just someone who had forgotten how strong she was.”

He paused, resting his hand on the glass railing just inches from mine.

“Besides... you weren't the only one who needed a rescue that morning at JFK.”

I blinked in surprise, turning to face him fully.

“What do you mean?”

Julian looked away for a split second, a rare flicker of vulnerability crossing his guarded features.

“That morning, I was heading to a meeting that was going to cost me half my father’s legacy in a hostile corporate takeover,” Julian admitted, his voice low and steady. “I was carrying a weight that felt impossible to lift. And then a woman in a soaked black coat grabbed my lapel, buried her face in my shoulder, and asked for a second of human grace.”

He looked back down at me, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.

“You reminded me that the world isn't just balance sheets and boardrooms, Eve. You broke through the armor before you even knew my name.”

My heart hammered against my ribs—not from fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming rush of realization.

The awkward, mechanical embrace at the airport terminal hadn't just been a stranger’s charity.

It had been the exact moment two broken things collided and started to heal.
