Part 4 – The Loan That Should Never Have Existed

Part 4 – The Loan That Should Never Have Existed

I stared at the loan agreement for several long seconds.

My own name appeared across the top.

Borrower: Connor Bradley.

Loan Amount: $420,000.

Collateral:

My house.

The detective slowly slid the document toward me.

"Have you ever seen this before?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"What about this signature?"

I didn't even need to study it.

"It's forged."

"But whoever did it practiced for a long time."

The financial investigator nodded.

"They also used copies of your driver's license, tax returns, employment records, and mortgage documents."

I looked toward my mother.

She refused to meet my eyes.

Instead, she stared at the floor.

For the first time in my life...

She had nothing to say.

Meanwhile...

Amy quietly sat beside Frederick inside the ambulance.

The pediatrician had arrived from the emergency department.

After examining my son, his expression darkened.

"How long has he been running this fever?"

Amy hesitated.

"Almost two days."

I turned sharply.

"Two days?"

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"I wanted to take him to the hospital yesterday."

"Your mother hid my car keys."

My stomach twisted.

"She told me if I embarrassed the family before the birthday party..."

"...she would make sure you divorced me."

The words landed harder than any punch.

For an entire year...

While I believed I was providing my family with security...

My wife had been living under constant threats inside our own home.

The detective interrupted my thoughts.

"Mr. Bradley..."

"We searched your mother's bedroom."

He placed another evidence bag onto the table.

Inside...

Was my personal checkbook.

I hadn't seen it in nearly eight months.

"I thought I'd lost that."

"You didn't."

"We also recovered your company seal."

My pulse quickened.

Company seal?

The investigator nodded.

"It appears someone used it to authenticate financial paperwork."

One officer approached carrying a laptop.

"We've accessed the security camera from First National Bank."

The footage appeared on the television.

Timestamp.

Four months earlier.

My mother entered the bank.

Beside her walked Mason.

The bank manager personally greeted them.

Twenty minutes later...

They exited carrying a thick envelope.

The detective paused the video.

"Recognize the manager?"

I did.

Kevin Walters.

The same banker who handled all my construction loans.

A warrant was issued immediately.

By evening...

Kevin was sitting inside an interrogation room.

He confessed within two hours.

Mason had introduced Teresa as someone authorized to manage my finances.

The forged power of attorney convinced him.

He approved the loan.

Skipped several verification procedures.

Ignored missing signatures.

And accepted a substantial cash payment in return.

"What happened to the money?" I asked.

The investigator opened another report.

"Most of it disappeared."

"Transferred into shell companies."

"Luxury vehicles."

"Casino accounts."

"Vacation homes."

Not one dollar...

Had ever been spent on my family.

Outside...

Several relatives quietly packed leftover food into their cars.

One by one...

Police officers stopped them.

Every cooler.

Every storage container.

Every unopened bottle.

Everything had been purchased using money stolen from my accounts.

Even the expensive seafood.

Even the birthday decorations.

Even the cake.

My son's first birthday...

Had been financed by fraud.

As the tow trucks removed unfamiliar vehicles from my driveway...

One elderly woman slowly approached me.

It was my Aunt Linda.

Unlike everyone else...

She looked ashamed.

"I tried to stop her."

I remained silent.

Linda lowered her head.

"Six months ago..."

"Teresa asked everyone to call this house 'hers.'"

"She said you were planning to put her name on everything."

"I knew it wasn't true."

"So why didn't you tell me?"

Tears rolled down her face.

"Because I was afraid she'd cut me off too."

Those words explained everything.

My mother hadn't controlled people with love.

She controlled them with money.

Money that belonged to me.

Just before midnight...

The lead detective walked back toward me carrying one final envelope.

"We've finished examining the forged paperwork."

"There is one document we still can't explain."

I opened the envelope.

Inside...

Was a professionally prepared will.

My will.

According to the document...

If I died unexpectedly...

Everything—

My house...

My savings...

My life insurance...

Even Frederick's education fund—

Would pass directly to Teresa Bradley.

Not Amy.

Not my son.

My hands began to shake.

"I never signed this."

"We know."

The detective's expression became grim.

"But here's the frightening part..."

He slid one final forensic report across the table.

"The signature isn't the biggest problem anymore."

I looked up.

"What do you mean?"

He held my gaze for several seconds before quietly saying,

"Mr. Bradley..."

"Based on everything we've uncovered..."

"We no longer believe they were only planning to steal your property."

A heavy silence filled the room.

May you like

Then he spoke the sentence that made every hair on my body stand up.

"We believe someone was preparing for your death."
