PART 4: The Silent Reinforcements
Brothers in arms answer the midnight call.
The moment Julian’s footsteps faded down the staircase, I pulled my encrypted satellite communicator from my pocket.
I tapped out a short, encrypted burst transmission to a secure receiver operating out of the nearby naval air station where my former platoon commander was stationed.
OP-FOR ACTIVE AT RESIDENCE. SECURE ASSETS. PREPARE EXTRACTION.
Within three minutes, my communicator vibrated with a single confirming reply: TEAM 4 EN ROUTE. ETA 0400.
I walked back over to the bed.
Maya was awake, her dark eyes wide and luminous in the moonlight, watching me with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.
“Was that Julian?” she whispered, her voice cracking.
“It was,” I said, sitting back down on the mattress and taking her cold hand in mine. “He thinks we’re meeting his corrupt attorney tomorrow morning to sign away the rest of our lives.”
“What are we going to do, Daniel?”
“We aren't going to an attorney’s office, Maya,” I smiled gently, brushing a lock of hair from her forehead. “We’re hosting a federal audit right here in our living room. And my brothers are bringing the paperwork.”
She let out a shaky, relieved breath, burying her face in my shoulder as the tension of the last six months finally began to drain out of her posture.
For hours, we lay there side by side, listening to the muffled sounds of laughter and clinking glasses drifting up from the formal dining room below, where my mother and brother toasted an empire built on sand.
They spent the entire night celebrating a victory that had never belonged to them.
And as the digital clock on the nightstand ticked silently toward four in the morning, the shadows outside our windows began to shift with the arrival of heavy tactical transport vehicles.

The ambush was set.
The wolves were inside the fold, and the sheepdog had finally come home.
