PART 4: The Corporate Purge Begins

PART 4: The Corporate Purge Begins

Unfaithful executives face immediate termination.

By Sunday morning, while Ethan and Madison sat in separate holding cells awaiting their arraignment hearings, the corporate headquarters of Bennett Development on Broad Street was a hive of intense, calculated activity.

I sat behind the sprawling mahogany executive desk in the top-floor corner office—the exact desk Ethan had spent years keeping locked behind biometric security scanners.

The nameplate bearing Ethan Bennett, CEO had already been tossed into the recycling bin by building maintenance, replaced temporarily by a clean brass marker awaiting my official seal.

Arthur Pendleton stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, reviewing a printed list of personnel terminations.

"We’ve locked out the three regional vice presidents who helped Ethan conceal the offshore wire transfers," Arthur reported, not looking up from the paper. "Their access cards were deactivated at midnight, and their corporate emails are currently being mirrored by our forensic cybersecurity team."

"Good," I replied calmly, signing my signature across a stack of banking authorization documents. "Anyone who traded their professional integrity for Ethan’s patronage has no place in this company. Fire them with cause, and let corporate counsel handle the breach-of-contract filings."

"Understood," Arthur nodded. "What about public relations? The local papers are running morning specials: The Cake Smash Heard Round Charleston. Wall Street blogs are already calling you the corporate strategist of the year."

I let out a brief, humorless smile, laying my Montblanc pen down on the blotter.

"Let them talk. The market respects stability and transparency, Arthur. Issue a standard press release stating that Bennett Development has restructured its executive leadership and initiated internal compliance audits. The truth is the best disinfectant."

Just then, a sharp knock sounded at the heavy oak office door.

Before we could answer, the door pushed open an inch, revealing our seventeen-year-old daughter, Lily, standing in the doorway wearing her favorite denim jacket, looking tired from the overnight trip from Savannah, but carrying an expression of fierce, unyielding pride.

Arthur gave us a respectful nod, gathered his folders, and slipped quietly out of the office, leaving us alone in the sunlit sanctuary.
