PART 4 – The Promise at the School Gate

PART 4 – The Promise at the School Gate

The next afternoon...

Samuel came back.

Again.

Then the next day.

And the next.

He never interrupted class.

Never tried to replace Noah's parents.

He simply waited outside the gate every afternoon.

When the bell rang...

He smiled.

"Ready to go home?"

The first week...

Noah only nodded.

The second week...

He began talking.

About spelling tests.

Soccer.

His favorite books.

The third week...

Without thinking...

He reached for Samuel's hand while crossing the street.

Both of them froze.

Noah quickly let go.

"I'm sorry."

Samuel gently held the small hand again.

"You never have to apologize..."

"...for wanting someone to walk beside you."

Months passed.

Samuel attended Noah's school play.

Science fair.

Parent-teacher conference.

Every event.

One evening the orphanage director called.

"Noah has something to ask you."

The little boy stood quietly holding a folded piece of paper.

"I wrote something..."

Samuel unfolded it.

At the top, in careful handwriting, were five simple words:

Will You Be My Grandpa?

Samuel broke down in tears.

"Noah..."

"I was hoping you'd ask."

Six months later...

The adoption papers were signed.
