PART 5: The Alliance Forged

PART 5: The Alliance Forged

Sisters in grief reclaim stolen inheritances.

By dawn, the estate was entirely cleared of police tape, sirens, and the frantic energy of federal investigators executing search warrants across every wing of the mansion.

I stood on the expansive stone terrace overlooking the manicured lawns and the gray expanse of Lake Michigan stretching out toward the horizon.

The morning air was crisp, biting into my skin like ice, but I didn't feel cold.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.

I turned around.

Odessa stood at the edge of the terrace, wearing a heavy black wool coat, her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail, holding two paper cups of hot black coffee.

She walked over and held one out toward me.

I took it, offering a quiet nod of thanks.

“The police chief called my attorney an hour ago,” Odessa said, her voice steady, though her eyes still carried the lingering shadows of a grief that had spanned decades. “He said they found my mother’s case files in the safe. They’re reopening the investigation. My mother’s death... and Evelina’s... they’re finally going to be prosecuted as a connected series of corporate homicides.”

“I’m sorry, Odessa,” I murmured, looking down at the steaming dark liquid in my cup. “For my father. For my mother. For all of it.”

“You didn't pull the trigger, Dash,” she replied softly, leaning her forearms against the stone balustrade. “You were just raised by wolves who made sure you never looked under the rug.”

“What are you going to do now?”

Odessa turned her head to look at me, a fierce, determined spark lighting up her dark eyes.

“I’m taking back the foundation. And I’m renaming it after my sister and my mother. The Wynn-Evelina Memorial Trust. We’re going to redirect every single cent of stolen corporate capital back into community shelters, victim advocacy, and legal aid for women trying to escape families like yours.”

I let out a slow, appreciative breath.

“Let me help you fund it,” I said instantly. “Every dime of my personal holdings, my shares in Mercer Industries, my trust accounts—transfer it all over. I don't want a single penny of blood money left in my name.”

Odessa studied my face for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation or deceit.

Finding none, a faint, genuine smile touched the corners of her mouth.

“It’s a deal, Dashiell. Let’s build something real out of the wreckage.”
