PART 3: The Paramedics Arrive

PART 3: The Paramedics Arrive
Medical teams breach hostile precinct barriers.
Before Michael could launch into another tirade against the heavy front glass, the wailing shriek of a siren cut through the rainy evening air.
A red-and-white city ambulance swung sharply into the precinct parking lot, its emergency strobe lights reflecting brilliantly off the wet squad cars and Michael’s dark SUV.
The vehicle ground to a halt right behind Michael’s bumper, blocking his exit.
Two emergency medical technicians jumped out of the back doors, grabbing a trauma kit and a folding stretcher as they rushed past the aggressive father standing on the steps.
"Step aside, sir, emergency personnel," the lead paramedic barked, brushing past Michael without slowing down.
"They're my kids! I'm their father!" Michael shouted, lunging forward to follow them, but the second paramedic threw out an arm, blocking his path. "You can't go in there without my consent!"
"Sir, interference with emergency medical services is a felony," the paramedic warned sharply, yanking open the front precinct door.
I unlocked the interior deadbolt just enough to let the medical team slip inside, keeping the door firmly shut against Michael’s pushing shoulder.
"Over here!" I called out, waving them toward the back of the reception counter where Olivia lay shivering on the floor.
The lead medic dropped to his knees immediately, unzipping his diagnostic pack and snapping on a pair of latex gloves.
"Pulse is slow and thready," the medic announced, shining a penlight into Olivia’s sluggish pupils. "Respiratory depression. She’s heavily sedated. Emma, honey, do you know what your sister took?"
Emma pointed shakily toward the sealed evidence envelope sitting on the counter.
"In the bag," Emma whispered. "Daddy gave it to us with apple juice."
The medic ripped open the envelope, extracted the empty oral syringe, and sniffed the residual liquid inside, his expression turning grim.
"Barbiturate derivative," the paramedic diagnosed instantly, looking up at me. "Enough to put an adult twice her size into a deep coma. If she hadn't thrown up half of it, this child wouldn't have survived the hour."
Hearing those words, a cold rage surged through my chest, burning away any remaining professional detachment.
I turned around, walked straight to the front door, and threw the deadbolt wide open.
Confronting the Predator
Arrogant abusers face cold precinct cells.
Michael stumbled forward into the station lobby as the door swung open, his face flushed with fury, pointing a shaking finger directly into my face.
"I'm going to sue this entire department!" Michael roared, ignoring the paramedics working frantically on his daughter. "You had no right to lock me out! Give me my kids right now or—"
"Shut your mouth, Carter," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a lethal, low register that made the angry father choke on his next sentence.
Before he could react, I grabbed him by the heavy fabric of his wool coat, shoved him backward against the interior wall, and slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists with practiced, lightning speed.
Click. Click.
"What the hell is this?!" Michael shrieked, struggling against the wall as the metal cuffs bit into his skin. "You can't arrest me! I'm a respected pediatrician in this county!"
"You're a monster who drugged his own seven-year-old daughters," I snapped, slamming him securely against the filing cabinet. "You're under arrest for aggravated child abuse, administration of illicit sedatives, and endangerment."
Across the room, Olivia let out a weak, agonizing groan as the medics lifted her onto the stretcher, securing her oxygen mask tightly over her face.
Emma stood beside the gurney, clutching the edge of the blanket, refusing to let go of her twin sister's hand.
"Daddy is a bad man," Emma whispered into the quiet station, her voice cutting through Michael’s furious screams like a knife.
"You ungrateful little brat!" Michael yelled, straining against the handcuffs, his mask of suburban respectability completely melting away to reveal the raging narcissist beneath. "I feed you! I clothe you! And this is how you pay me back?!"
"Keep yelling, Carter," I said, pulling out my radio to request an immediate transport wagon and county child protective services. "Every word you say right now is just adding another year to your federal sentence."

The paramedics wheeled the stretcher toward the ambulance, with Emma walking bravely right beside them.
I held Michael firmly by the arm, escorting him toward the back holding cells, leaving the station behind us wrapped in a silence that felt heavier than the rain outside.
