PART 7: The Final Demotion

Unfaithful husbands learn their proper place.

The boardroom fell into a heavy, suffocating silence that lasted several long seconds, broken only by the hum of the overhead ventilation system.

Daniel looked around the table, realizing that his wealth, his status, his corporate empire, and his mistress had all vanished into thin air within the span of forty-eight hours.

"You... you're stripping me of my CEO title?" Daniel whispered, looking up at his mother with pathetic, watery eyes, the last remnants of his arrogance completely burned away. "After everything I've built?"

"You built nothing, Daniel," Vivian replied coldly, standing up from her chair and buttoning her blazer. "You merely inherited a legacy you weren't strong enough to carry, and you tried to destroy the woman who kept you afloat while you did it."

She turned her gaze toward me, offering a warm, respectful nod.

"Effective immediately, Claire Mercer assumes full executive control as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Holdings," Vivian announced to the board.

A unanimous chorus of approval echoed around the room as the directors raised their hands in support.

I stood up slowly, smoothing down the front of my charcoal pantsuit, and walked deliberately down the length of the long mahogany table until I was standing directly beside Daniel’s metal folding chair at the very back.

He looked up at me, shrinking back against the wall, utterly defeated.

"I'm sorry, Daniel," I whispered down to him, my voice carrying a quiet, razor-sharp irony. "I'd love to chat longer about restructuring, but I need you to stay right there in the back. The adults finally have the table."

Without looking back, I turned on my heel and walked toward the head of the boardroom, ready to lead the company into a future built on truth, strength, and absolute justice.
