PART 5: Unraveling the Web
Financial audits expose sprawling criminal networks.
Three days after the burial, Detective Miller invited Lucas and me down to the downtown precinct to review the expanded scope of the federal investigation into Evelyn Vance’s financial dealings.
We sat across from his metal desk in an office lined with overflowing case files and whiteboard diagrams mapping out a web of deceit that spanned multiple counties.
“You rattled her legal team pretty good, Mrs. Vance,” Detective Miller greeted us with a faint, appreciative smirk as we took our seats. “Attorney Vance showed up at the precinct this morning begging to cooperate with federal prosecutors in exchange for immunity from his own firm's role in Evelyn’s fraudulent wire transfers.”
“Good,” Lucas said, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. “What else did the audit uncover?”
Detective Miller turned his laptop around, displaying a complex spreadsheet filled with highlighted accounts and offshore corporate entities.
“It turns out Evelyn wasn't just a reckless gambler or a desperate socialite,” the detective explained, tapping the screen. “For over a decade, she operated an illegal predatory lending ring targeting vulnerable families through church charity channels. She would offer emergency financial relief to struggling parents, lock them into exorbitant, unpayable interest rates using forged proxy signatures on their property deeds, and then foreclose on their homes when they defaulted.”
I stared at the screen in absolute horror.
“She did that through the church?” I whispered. “Under the guise of charity?”
“Under the guise of Christian grace,” Detective Miller nodded grimly. “Over forty families lost their homes to her shell companies. And when your husband passed away a year ago, she tried to pull the exact same maneuver on his personal estate trust, which is why Lucas’s father had been fighting her in probate court right up until his sudden illness.”
A cold shudder ran down my spine.
My husband’s sudden death a year ago—diagnosed as a rapid-onset heart condition—had always felt slightly off, though the medical reports had seemed definitive at the time.
I looked over at Lucas.
His face had gone completely rigid, his eyes locked onto the whiteboard diagram across the room where his father’s name was written in bold black marker.
“Detective,” Lucas said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. “What about my dad’s autopsy report? You guys closed that case a year ago. But if Evelyn was running financial scams and forging documents... could she have had access to his medical care?”
Detective Miller paused, his expression shifting from professional detachment to solemn gravity.
“We’ve already flagged your father’s death certificate, Lucas,” the detective admitted softly. “The medical examiner is reviewing hospital toxicology logs from his final week. If we find evidence of tampering, Evelyn won't just be facing murder charges for Lily. She’ll be facing a double homicide indictment.”
The room grew so silent you could hear the hum of the overhead fluorescent lights.
The monster we thought we knew in life was infinitely worse than we could have ever imagined in our darkest nightmares.

She hadn't just destroyed our family; she had built an entire empire of corpses and stolen homes, masking her atrocities behind folded hands and pious church hymns.
“Do whatever it takes, Detective,” I said, placing my hand over Lucas’s clenched fist on the desk. “Tear down every brick she laid. Leave nothing standing.”
