PART 3: The Long Walk Down Hallways

PART 3: The Long Walk Down Hallways

Corrections officers hide monumental surprise intentions.

The walk down the concrete corridors of the state facility felt unusually tense and protracted.

Correction Officer Miller—a stern, imposing veteran guard known throughout the cell block for his unyielding strictness and absolute lack of humor—led the way with heavy, deliberate footsteps that echoed off the vaulted brick walls.

Arthur kept his eyes fixed on the gray heels of Miller’s boots, his hands cuffed securely in front of him by standard transfer restraints, walking with the submissive, downcast posture required of every inmate.

Normally, Officer Miller didn't speak to prisoners unless issuing a direct order.

Today, however, as they passed the third security checkpoint near the visiting pavilion, Miller cleared his throat.

"Keep your head up, Vance," Miller muttered quietly, staring straight ahead without turning around.

Arthur’s breath hitched. He risked a quick, confused glance at the guard’s profile.

"Sir?" Arthur whispered.

"Just walk straight, keep your mouth shut, and do what you're told when we cross these double doors," Miller instructed, his tone still gruff, though a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of his mouth suggested something entirely out of protocol.

Arthur’s mind raced through a dozen frantic possibilities.

Had Clara’s health deteriorated? Had the appeal for his sentence reduction been denied by the federal judge?

The anxiety burning in his chest felt like swallowing hot coals.

They reached the heavy, reinforced steel doors marked RESTRICTED PERSONNEL - VISITORS AND PAROLE ONLY.

Miller swiped his electronic security badge against the digital wall reader.

The locking mechanism responded with a deep, authoritative thud, and the massive door swung inward, revealing not the cold, sterile interrogation rooms Arthur expected, but a softly lit multipurpose community room usually reserved for staff training seminars.

The room was completely silent.

The windows were covered with thick blackout blinds, casting a dim, amber glow over the linoleum floor.

"Step inside, Vance," Miller commanded, gently but firmly guiding Arthur across the threshold before pulling the heavy steel door shut behind them with a muffled click.

Arthur stood frozen in the center of the room, his eyes adjusting slowly to the amber light.

And then, a faint, sweet scent hit his senses—a scent that had nothing to do with bleach, iron, or prison food.

It smelled of vanilla frosting, warm butter, and fresh coffee.
