PART 7: Crossing the Threshold

PART 7: Crossing the Threshold

Heavy front doors open to waiting families.

The heavy steel front doors of the state penitentiary pushed outward, releasing a rush of crisp, autumn air that smelled of damp earth, burning leaves, and absolute liberation.

Arthur stepped out onto the wide concrete steps, shielding his eyes against the brilliant, unhindered glare of the midday sun.

He wore his old flannel shirt and worn blue jeans—they hung a little looser on his frame now, a testament to the weight he had lost behind bars, but they felt like royal robes compared to the prison uniform.

Down at the foot of the steps, parked beside the visitors' curb, stood an old, faded blue sedan.

Leaning against the passenger door, holding a small, pink-dressed toddler in her arms, was Clara.

She looked up as the heavy doors slammed shut behind him.

For a second, she froze, clutching Lily tighter as if afraid it was a cruel administrative error, a mirage that would vanish if she blinked too fast.

Then, she saw the warden standing in the doorway without handcuffs, nodding and pointing toward the steps.

A choked, breathless sob escaped Clara’s lips.

She didn't wait for Arthur to walk down the stairs.

Clara dropped her car keys, hoisted Lily securely onto her hip, and started running up the concrete steps toward him, her sneakers clattering loudly against the stone.

Arthur didn't walk either.

He broke into a dead sprint, his boots pounding against the ground, his arms opening wide as the distance between them evaporated second by second.

They met halfway up the grand staircase.

Clara collided against his chest, dropping her head onto his shoulder as the tears she had held back for three agonizing years finally flooded out without restraint.

Arthur wrapped his arms around both of them—pulling his wife and his daughter into a grip so fierce, so protective, and so all-consuming that it felt as though he were trying to fuse their bodies together to make up for every lost second.

"You're home... you're really home," Clara wept into his collar, her fingers digging desperately into the back of his flannel shirt.

"I'm here, Clara. I'm never leaving," Arthur choked out, burying his face in her hair.

Then, he felt a small, soft pair of arms wrap around the back of his neck.
