PART 3: Secrets Written in Blood

PART 3: Secrets Written in Blood

Crumpled photographs shatter engineered illusions.

I turned the Polaroid photograph over in my hands.

The image depicted a woman with soft hazel eyes, dark wavy hair, and a tired, gentle smile standing in front of a modest, sunlit cottage by the coast.

She looked strikingly, impossibly like me—as if looking into a feminine mirror across time.

My chest tightened, a suffocating wave of grief and memory washing over me.

Ten years ago, I had fallen deeply in love with a brilliant, quiet medical student named Clara Vance.

We were young, struggling, and fiercely devoted to each other.

Then, one rainy night, Clara went into premature labor while I was away securing our first apartment deposit.

When I arrived at the city hospital the next morning, the chief obstetrician—a cold, clinical man appointed by my father’s corporate board—met me in the sterile hallway with a devastating verdict.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Sterling,” the doctor had said without blinking. “The complications were catastrophic. The baby didn't survive, and Miss Vance suffered a severe mental break. Her family requested she be transferred to a private sanitarium upstate. She doesn't want to see you. She blames you.”

I had been broken.

Consumed by grief and guilt, I threw myself into the family business, letting my father and Victoria’s family orchestrate my life, leading me inexorably toward this multimillion-dollar corporate merger disguised as a wedding.

I believed my daughter was dead.

I believed Clara had abandoned me.

Now, looking down at the blood-stained note on the back of the photograph, the entire engineered lie imploded.

“They are trying to steal our daughter. Find Stefan.”

Written in Clara’s unmistakable handwriting, dated just three hours ago.

"What is your name, sweetie?" I whispered, my voice breaking as I brushed a tear away from the little girl's dirty cheek.

"My name is Lily," she sniffled, looking up at me with those exact hazel eyes. "And mommy said your name is Daddy."

A low gasp broke from my lips.

Daddy.

She didn't die at birth.

They had stolen her.

They had lied to me, drugged Clara, and locked her away so my father could force me into a high-society marriage with the Vanderbilt empire.

"Stefan! Are you out of your mind?!" Victoria shrieked, marching right up to us and grabbing my arm, trying to haul me back to my feet. "Look at me! We have three hundred guests waiting! You are marrying me right now, or I swear to God my family will crush your company into dust before the sun sets!"

I stood up slowly.

I looked down at Victoria—at the diamond tiara, the expensive silk, and the cold, manipulative fury twisting her face.

The woman I thought I knew was a stranger.

The life I was about to enter was a gilded prison built on stolen lives and corporate deceit.

"The wedding is off, Victoria," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, absolute register that made her recoil in shock.

"You can't do this!" she screamed, losing all aristocratic composure as the guests began shouting in uproar. "Stefan! Come back here!"

May you like

I didn't look back.

I scooped little Lily securely into my arms, turned my back on the altar, and bolted down the center aisle of the cathedral in my tuxedo.
