PART 6: The Shadows Begin to Part

PART 6: The Shadows Begin to Part

Blood debts forge unbreakable underworld alliances.

“You shouldn't have threatened a cop like that,” I whispered, though my voice carried a strange mixture of fear and awe. “They’ll come back with a warrant. They’ll try to shut this hospital down.”

“Let them try,” Dominic replied calmly, pulling his chair back up to the bedside and sitting down. “St. Jude’s Memorial operates on endowment funds managed by shell corporations tied directly to my portfolio. The board of directors answers to me, not the 4th Precinct.”

He looked down at the black leather checkbook still resting on the bedside table.

“Now,” Dominic continued, picking it up and placing it directly into my uninjured hand, wrapping my fingers around the cover. “Where were we?”

I looked down at the checkbook, then up into the dark, intense eyes of the most feared man in New York.

Twelve years ago, my father had died trying to clean up a city that refused to be saved.

He had left behind a grieving widow, a sick son, and a daughter who learned too early that the world only rewards the ruthless.

Yet here I was, wounded and broke, being handed the keys to my family’s salvation by a mafia boss whose children I had saved from a hail of bullets.

“If I take this,” I said quietly, my voice steady despite the pain in my chest, “I’m tying my family’s survival to yours. People like you don't offer favors without expecting a return.”

Dominic smiled—a rare, grim expression that made him look less like a monster of the underworld and more like a man who understood the brutal math of survival.

“You already paid your return in full last night when you took two rounds meant for my daughters, Lily,” Dominic said gently. “This isn't a favor. This is an investment in a partnership.”

I opened the checkbook.

I picked up the pen with my left hand.

And for the first time in twelve years, the suffocating fear of tomorrow finally began to lift.
